I have never been to an aaw symposium but I was thinking about trying to make it to Tampa. I am trying to find out the schedule for the event such as when does the syposium starts/end. When does the first demonstrations start. I have not found any information on when the show starts and ends each day. I tried looking for that information in past symposiums to get some kind of idea but no luck.

Can someone give me an idea as to the general schedule for the event?

Kevin,
John is correct, we keep the same basic schedule from year to year.
We add and subtract minor events and occasionally tweak times.
For example, Last year we held the Instant Gallery critique in Saturday for the first time ever thus year it is back on Sunday.
most people arrive on thursday, register meet up with friends.... the gallery shows open on Thursday. about 1/2 the people spend sunday night.

here is the current draft of the schedule that will be in the symposium handbook. hopefully it keeps enough formating to be understandable

Whoever you decide to see you will probably change your mind when you get there. 🙂 I've tried many times to make a list and say here's who I want to see and once in while I actually follow up on one or two. The problem is you start hearing good reports about his demo or that demo, or you get there and the room is full or you meet some new friends and they all talk you into going to see such and such. There's just to much to do and so many decisions to make. A lot of fun but very overwhelming. No matter who you see you still come home motivated.

A complete, 100%, unequivocal "ditto" to everything John said. My wife and I went to our 1st symposium last June in San Jose. We attended a demo in every rotation, visited every gallery, display and vendor, did the banquet and auction. We hit the sack each night completely jazzed and spent- never had one bad second the entire time. Tampa is a bit too far for us this year- we'll do some regional events- but we'll be in Phoenix in '14. I've been to quite a few conventions and trade expos in my 62 years but nothing as fun and inspiring as the AAW. Enjoy!

Is the symposium always in SJ? The Mrs. and I might be out there but not sure what month. Would like to attend if possible. I might even buy the Mrs. some turning tools for our June anniversary.😛

Hi John!

The AAW's International Woodturning Symposium moves around the country to different venue cities each year. This year (June 28-30) we will be in Tampa, Florida; next year we will be in Phoenix, Arizona.

For an overview of past symposium locations, have a look HERE:

http://www.woodturner.org/sym/all_symposia.htm

The meeting location moves around to try to have the Symposium at places where most members of the AAW can attend, at least every few years, within a reasonable drive from their home location. There are several criteria that go into the selection of Symposium locations, but the general attempt has been to move the site chosen around the country each year so the meeting becomes more "local" every few years for most AAW members.

I have been to every AAW Symposium since 2005, and after only 8 years' experience at these symposia, I can tell you that it is an excellent event for "learning turning" of any kind, having access to many of the best turners in the world, as a source for creative inspiration, and has arguably the best Trade Show in the World for seeing and acquiring every imaginable kind of woodturning equipment and supplies. I am CERTAIN that you would find plenty of anniversary gifts at the Trade Show in Tampa!! Perhaps it might be the time now to think about re-arranging your travel plans to the other end of the country for the end of June?

More information about the 2013 Symposium, including registration information, can be found at:

I hope to see you there!

Well, I am glad that you come home motivated, John. I always come home and say why bother.🙁

If it will help cheer you up, Andy, I have always received inspiration from seeing your beautiful segmented Corian work at SWAT. I have not tried either Corian or segmented work, but I keep thinking about it. I have a number of pictures of your work that I have shared with my wife after returning home from SWAT symposiums. I've never been to an AAW national symposium so I am not sure what to expect. A few of our club members have attended some of them and the comments are mixed.

Thanks for your kind words, Bill. I am glad you like my Corian work. You just made my day.

Bill,
The AAW Is a lot like SWAT but BIGGER.

Expect to be overwhelmed.
SWAT is the largest of the regionals and has 800 - 900 attendees which was the AAW symposium size in the 90s. The AAW has been running 1600-1400 recently.

In a very crude sense the regional symposiums are like a major league baseball game and the AAW is like the Allstate game.
SWAT might be like a world series game.

The SWAT lead demonstrators have all been AAW demonstrators and the regional demonstrator have been or are likely to be AAW demonstrators.
The AAW has more choices and more international demonstrators.

The AAW dozens of demos suitable for the beginner. But one thing that set it apart from the regionals are more demonstrations on specialties like segmenting, custom pens, ornamental, signature pieces, piercing, airbrushing, alternative materials....... And some presentations aimed at the advanced turner on subjects such as photography, marketing, teaching, demonstrating, selling work.."....
Plus the largest trade show, Largest instant gallery, chapter challenge, AAW Members meeting, AAWchapters meeting, 3 woodturning gallery shows. EOG Auction,....

I very much enjoy the Florida Symposium with its 300 attendees and the AAW with its 1600. They are just very different.
Have fun!
Al
