I pulled the trigger on a new 1642 yesterday. I've been building up my arsenal of tools for three months now. I own a Supernova2 chuck, but I'm not sure of which insert to buy that will mount to my spindle. I've gone to the Teknatool site, and from what I can gather, they recommend a 1X8 TPI for all Jet models.
The 1642 has a 1 1/4X 8 spindle thread, so I'm a bit confused.
Thanks in advance for your help, this is a wonderful group.

Obviously the site is outdated in this, as with some other information. You get the insert to match your lathe. In this case, the 1 1/4 by 8. Note, however, that there are lathes with exceptionally long threads, and those which also, for reasons beyond me, a right-hander and power sander, allow reversing the rotation. In this case you want the "L" model insert, which is longer, and is threaded for a locking grub screw. Since the longer will work on shorter threads, like my 3000, might as well get it at the outset as opposed to the J. Price is the same.

1642/Super Nova Insert: per Teknatool

Hi, I just went throught this a couple of weeks ago. Teknatool site is somewhat out of date in that the insert they tell you to use is no longer produced. I was directed, by Teknatool, to call Teknatool USA at 304-295-8166. Speak with Tom Geist. He will send your insert, item code ILNS, which is $31.27. That includes shipping. I suppose that if you looked for the ILNS insert, you might find it cheaper somewhere else.

If you haven't mounted it already, take the extra few moments to clean the seat in the chuck and the flash from the threads on the insert. Much as I love my Teknatool products, they can be a bit sloppy in their QC. When I converted from 1" 8 to 1 1/4" 8 inserts, I had one which wouldn't seat properly. Since I knew the chuck to be true from years on the old lathe, I examined the insert. When they reamed the end, they peened some metal out sort of like a burnished burr on a cabinet scraper, which metal prevented proper seating of the insert. Use a scraper to get this metal out of the way without altering the face of the insert.

Do not try to remove it with your fingers, even if it looks very loose. I'm told it's sharp enough to give you tender fingers for a week.

Adapter problems

I have a Oneway 1640 and bought my talon chuck from oneway 2yrs ago. Love them. Then I bought a couple of bodies only with the jumbo jaws from Packard in Oct. Only used a couple of times and when I reversed sanded the thing came loose. Looked more closely, and the set screws were not going thru the adapter to engage the spindle. Called Packard last week. Told the tech that the set screw position were not in the 9 o'clock, 3 o'clock as my chuck from oneway (as well as not going thru). They were at 9:30 and 2:30. He said that was strange and that they get their adapters from oneway (earlier that day, oneway said they get their's from "outsoursing"). I tried my screw from another good adapter and it didn't go thru. He told me how to take the set screw and file on opposite sides vertical grooves to make a "tap"- I did it and was proud of myself as I could feel the sharp grooves-ah, problem solving-it didn't work 🙁 Called the tech back and I got a new adapter within 2 days. Nice people at Packard. So some of our quality stuff ain't so good at times. I am guessing the oneway adapters were not Canadian made. Gretch
