I noticed on a few other discussions of the problems with the 1 1/8 inch threaded inserts not meshing well with the lathe spindles. The one I recently purchased went together extremely well with the chuck and the lathe spindle. That being said what I would like to know from other users is how long do those fiber washers last with the grub screws and are they absolutely necessary for operations. I contacted teknatool about getting some replacements and they gladly sent me 4 more along with extra set screws at no charge but I was wondering how long those would last because they seem to get mashed flat at each use.

I only use that fiber washer between the insert and the chuck and being a tool junkie and not caring to change jaws I have a lot of the Nova chucks dedicated to either 1 1/4 X 8 or 1 1/8 X 8. Once these inserts are on the chucks they stay there. As far as the grub screws used to keep the chuck on the spindle I use no washer there.

One to prevent galling of the insert is all. Snug it down and leave it alone.
If you have the locking insert with the grub screw to fit it to appropriate spindles - you're on you own to figure out if you do - you may want to disregard it altogether in favor of a brass grub screw. Snug brass against steel and enjoy your reverse as often as you like.

Occurs to me that we may have an anachronism of sorts in the insert. No need for an anti-galling device on something which is mounted, secured, and left alone. BUT. The original Nova chuck needed one under the other grub screw, the one that kept the outer ring from flopping around the inner. That needed periodic adjustment, and galling was definitely not desired. Thus the fiber insert.
Not all inserts are created equal or consistently
Tried a "woodriver" insert with my supernova and the first one was not manufactured properly and induced a wobble. Took it back and the second one was fine. Also, for anti-galling or anti-seizing, I've used a product by "loc-tite" that looks like an oversized chapstick. I've not had to use it on spindles, but is great to have around the shop.

I've three Nova chucks (Super, G3 and mini) and one Titan and have never had any problems with any of them or any of the inserts. I did have an issue with the first insert for my Vicmark though.
Yep,multiple chucks and never remove the inserts is the only way to go in my book.
