Turn it, then
burn, dye, bleach, carve, sandblast, paint, marker, chainsaw, boil, gild ,hammer - whatever your idea of embellished is. But it needs to be a platter.

Contest:
This is the announcement of the 6th contest - focusing on Embellished Platter. If you missed the last contests, do a search for "contest" in the forum search.

Rules for this contest:
  1. Deadline is July 10, 2006 midnight. (The contest was announced 5/25/2006, so this gives ~7 weeks including 6 weekends to complete the submission).
  2. Each participant will create an embellished platter...in line with the feature story by Neil Scobie from the Summer 2006 AW Journal issue
  3. Any and all turned platter submissions will be considered
  4. The platter must be created after 5/1/06 (corresponding to the AAW Journal Summer 2006 issue)
  5. One submission per person. You can submit multiple pics but only 2 pictures maximum will be submitted for judging.\
  6. The platter may only be submitted by the turner themselves.
  7. You cannot change your submission after you submit
  8. Size restrictions: 8" Diameter maximum.
  9. Contest is open to all, including AAW members and non-members.
  10. I am sick of having to put so many restrictions on, but 10 seemed better than 9.
How to submit:
  1. Post your entry in the photo gallery and label it "AAW Forum contest entry" so people will recognize it.
  2. Also email Jeff when you submit the entry, and he will track the entries -
email to jjilg@sbcglobal.net. He will respond with an acknowledgement, unless the spam filter rejects your email. If he doesn't send an acknowledgement, then send him a Private Message (PM) via the PM function in this forum. Also he will maintain a list of entries in the forum near the end of the contest.
Winner and Prize:

Winner selection:
Some super huge name in woodturning will be more than happy to be the judge, as soon as we ask them!

The prize is:
1) The winner will be announced in the forum, and on the AAW homepage.
2) The winner will also be announced in the AAW Journal.

The winning woodturner will be requested to write a short description about
the piece, their inspiration for it, and a short woodturner biography. This
write-up from the artist will be due within 1 week after the contest results
are announced. The write-up will be turned into a webpage. The webpage would
be announced and linked on the homepage similar to the last winner Gary Ljostad as shown here

Please ask any questions if any of this is unclear or if there is a typo of
some type. Also please feel free to enter the contest - platters are a great
skill builder, and can encompass many design and style elements. Let your
imagination run wild, this is supposed to be fun!!!

Steve How can the winner bring the piece to the symposium if the contest ends in July. Are you talking about next years symposium?

John,

Didn't they tell you? The AAW, working in secret partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, has actually discovered a method for time travel. Therefore after the winner is named in August, they and their piece will be transported back in time to June 21st so that their platter can be included in the the Loo-vul Instant Gallery.

The prior research which led to this great discovery did have its rocky moments, however, such as when a number of issues of the Winter 2005 Journal were accidentally time-warped into the future leading to their being delivered months after others even though they had only actually been in the postal system for a few days' of "real" time.

My source informs me that they are still working on the potential paradox of the winning entry being displayed before it was created, but I'm told that they are confident they can overcome this "minor detail". I truly hope they get it solved because my source also tells me that failure to do so could result in the end of all life on this planet as we know it or a high likelihood of the Sun going supernova. This is, in part, why I'm driving to Louisville this year. I'm bringing an old student desk like those used when I was in 3rd grade. I figure if anything happens I'll have just enough time to get under it and therefore be protected.

Well, Mark, while conspiracy theory folks would probably validate your response, it is much more likely that Jeff didn't proofread my edited cut and paste.

Although I don't find it unreasonable that it might be brought to Portland in 07 to great fanfare and accolades.

GADZOOKS! Either my source has been co-opted by Fringe Elements or our neighborhood Moderators are part of the disinformation cover-up. Thought that "All turned bowls will be accepted" looked a bit suspicious!

Mark Even with those advances in time warp, worm holes, and string theory, Bill Grumbine would still get his issue late.

John - that is correct but for the wrong reason. We put Bill on the "mail these copies late" list....we aim to please! 🙂

Steve is right - I got lazy and was soaked up in board work so I missed that one. However if you guys think the AAW should invest in time travel technology then we could definitely capitalize on future woodturning inventions now!

I think you have it a little mixed up Mark. I have learned from experience that a package does not travel backwards in time, but forward in time. What happens is when you mail something in June, it will be sure to arrive in August.

That's what I said, the Winter Journal was warped FORWARD so instead of being delivered in early December, it showed up in late February after a trip of only a few days.

Still planning on taking my old desk, though, just in case.

A brief update on rules for this contest (and all forum contests).

- Anyone may enter. You don't have to be an AAW member.
- Only one entry per person (one physical piece) but you can submit two pics of that piece.

AAW summer platter contest

This is an 8" mesquite plate that has four 1/4" beads embellished on the top. The outer bead goes around the outside and down where an Ogee slops down too the bottom of the platter. The platter is finished with Mike Mahoney’s Walnut oil and wax finish. This will be going to the AAW symposium with me soon.

This time travel thing is a great idea. I do it all the time when I work in Guam or Saipan. Before heading home to Hawaii on Friday I always buy the Friday paper in Guam then hop on the airplane. I get home on Thursday, the day before I left. Then I expand my vast fortune by using my pre-knowledge of Fridays sports scores and stock and commodity prices. Bill Gates has been calling me asking for tips, but I have to work with his products all the time so he can go pound sand. I will share with you folks however!!!

The post office has been unclear on the concept from the start and insists on traveling west instead of east, thereby advancing a day. That is why Bill's Journal is always late.

By the way, the phrase "Going Postal" has nothing to do with workplace violence. It is time traveler slang for traveling west over the dateline, just like the USPS does. The media has completely boluxed this phrase through an unfortunate misunderstanding. The next edition of the OED will attempt to correct that.

Hope you all have a nice yesterday!!

Dave
