Hi everyone. It has been a long time since I was on this form. The last time I visited was 15 August 05 according to the tracker. If I was not over here in Iraq I would have been around more. You know they keep us kind of busy in the Army and I just finally got my own internet connection so I’m not banned from where I go on the net.
Well, now to the point. Do any of you remember an article that’s out there about some company donating a mini-lathe to a soldier over here in Iraq to turn with? I don't even remember the magazine, but I thought it might have been Delta that did the donation. I still have until March 2007 on my tour (yes 18 months total and a guard member to boot) and I’m missing turning something bad, so I thought I would ask. It's bad, the little free time we get and there’s not much to do in the wood realm.
Before you get the wrong idea I’m not really looking to beg for a free one. I will pay for it, but shipping stuff here is very hard and can be expensive. So I though maybe they have a way to get it here. I could not even get a dart board sent here because of size restrictions. So however they sent that lathe in the article might be a way for me to get one. I would also need to have hand tools and some wood mailed. Amazing that there is not much for wood where I’m at. You would think I was in a desert.
So any help in finding that article would be great. See you can’t just call around and check things out over here. Or at least you better hope your family does not find out that’s how you spent your phone time instead of talking to them! 😀
If anyone did have some old turning or woodworking magazines they are willing to part with and would not mind the cost of shipping, I know a few soldiers that would love to thumb through them over here in our little make shift wood shop. Please PM, but understand it might take a day or two for me to respond. I’m not sure this was the place to ask, but you all have been great on all of the turning questions so I hope you don’t mind being side tracked for a minute with these stupid questions. Thanks,

Just a thought...

I'm sure there would be many people in the UK willing to send magazines out, too. There must be a few British Turners on Tour as well. Maybe a call to the Armed Forces Public Liason Office...or the US equivalent...could result in an offer to ship them if they were sent to a continental US shipping point?

I'll make enquiries this side tomorrow.

You never know.

Address

See I know you guys and gals would be great! True to form. Here is my mailing address. I'm not worrying about seconds too much because we have out posts where they might like something to read and the clergy can always re-distribute some for me. If we fill a warehouse I will let you know we have enough okay! Problem with mail is some times it takes up to 3 weeks to get here. I just what to thank everyone a head of time for there time and cost of mailing them. Thanks, your great!

Hey Joel,

Your call for woodturning and woodworking magazines reached our humble mailing list a couple of days ago. Apparently one of our members is a member on the AAW forum and he passed on your request to us.

So, to answer the call, yesterday I sent out a big box of magazines along with a 2 DVD set compliments of Fine Woodworking magazine; Video Tips Volume 1 and Making Jigs & Fixtures and a Fine Woodworking book titled Work Stations and Tool Storage. I hope you have some form of DVD player out there otherwise you'll have to wait until you get home to watch them.

Now, who am I? I started our mailing list 7 years ago. Then just over a year ago me and three other webmasters finally got our web site up...

http://www.sawdusters.org

If you have an Internet connection out there you're welcome to join our mailing list - it's free!

I'll understand why if you don't want to join right now but in the mean time you're welcome to peruse the archives of all our messages posted since then...

Enjoy the mags and DVDs - they're yours to keep.

Good luck and God Bless you all.

Thanks Joe

The darn reach of woodworkers is far and wide. Heard it from a friend. That's too cool and a REO Speedwagon song I think. This is great, I can't wait to dive into the magazines and yes we have a DVD player so we are good to go. I'm going to your site right after this! Again, thanks and stay safe. 😉

Joel buddy!!

First of all, thanks for your service to our country, sir. It means a lot to this vet, especially so close to July 4th.

Second, where's your home town? I have something up my sleeve in asking.

Home Town

I guess that would be where ever my girl's are at (my home is not here that is for sure 😛 ). I'm not really sure how any one lives here? It's like you turn on the hair dryer and face it right into your eyes and then have someone clean out a filter bag right in front of it. Yuk! 😱 Still, to answer your question. My lathe is in the big town of Moose Lake, MN.

Would this do???

Hey Joel
I would like to help ya if you want. I just started in woodturning about 3 weeks ago but am a long time woodworker and I know how insane a person can get when their is nothing to do 😛 .
I could not afford a real lathe 😱 but found this one to start with. The pic is a lathe that I got from ebay. It depends what you want to turne this one will do pens good and maby bats or other small items.
I know it can be very expensive to ship something as heavy as a REAL lathe this one only weighs about 10 pounds. It uses a 3/8 drive drill motor as power, I'M sure yall have one to spare.
If you are intrested please let me know and I will start getting it together for ya.Maby someone out their could send some tools to ya or something please let me know. :cool2:

I’m not the best narrator, but I would like to thank you all again! 🙂 I'm getting excited to start receiving the magazines and the lathe. Jude your right I will need to get some tools. I have an old file and screw driver so I should be able to get along okay. Skew and fingernail gouge right! Now just to find a grinder and I will be set! Oh yeah can you get Alan Lacer to come over the pond and show me that skew grind again. I have a great memory it's just short. Peace and Love, Joel

Joe, they already made it here! It's too cool to have something to read that makes sense to me, and when I'm really dumb I can just watch! It's great, all the guys love them. We had to set rules so we made sure we get them back! Thank you, again! To any one else sending magazines - thank you a head of time, we love them! SFC Race

Soon to be turning in Iraq

I just wanted to put some closure on this thread for everyone. I just went home for leave and brought a mini-lathe back when I came. That way I could go over the weight limit set by the post office. So with buying the lathe and a couple of new tools. I’m a little more broke, but a lot more happy. I had too, you know how it is – right? You just can’t go to the store without getting at least one or two new tools for the next big project. I had to send 5 boxes of tools and wood to me here via the mail or I would have been over the weight in my tote. So, now we are set for some turning. Just miniature stuff and pens, but that should keep us busy in our limited free time. Again, thanks to you that so generously sent magazines and videos. There great! And thanks for all of your support for us over here. The men and women of the Armed Services really do appreciate it, I see it everyday. You stay safe in those shops and studios and we will try to do the same.

Closure????

Closure hell! I want to see PICTURES!!!

Kids receiving tops, sergeants writing up messy workspaces, how you're hiding the stuff and preventing your own woodworking hobby shop from opening up!

Don't write off the thread yet, man. UPDATES!!! We want UPDATES!
:cool2:

Update

Well do you want the good or the bad news first? Well here is the good. Jude your lathe and tools arrived. We are all set up and ready to go. Thanks so much. Now for the bad. The day before I got back from leave the wood shop guru went on leave. This sent the wood shop into a major slow down. No one is in there full-time. I'm the part-time guy, but I hardly have time to get half the projects done with the other duties I have. So long story short as of today I have set everything up, showed many soldiers the set-up and turned like 2 hours where everything I tried turning - turned to @#$%, well lets just say you know. Many of you old pros might not know this, but this is a perishable skill for a novice or only slightly better than beginner. I have not turned in 11 months now. It shows something terrible. Not that I’m put off by this. My friends and myself will get turning, we will get the hang of it, and we will produce something beside shavings! This is my goal. We have come too far to be defeated. Boy, you would not believe how bad I have got. lol Once we get something made I will attempt to post pictures. I know there is a post out there on how to do that.
