I just helped cut down a big Box Elder tree on Friday. Then I processed it into blanks via the chainsaw. It's such a pretty wood with all the orange and red streaks. How come you guys didn't warn me it was so darned stinky??? Phew!!! 😱

I remember being around that "stinky smell" when I was a little boy. I never figured out what it was til I was in my late teens. When I realized what it was, I had already developed a strong dislike for the small shrub that seemed to be in all kinds of formal gardens....

Give me a Holly any day of the week...

Although... for turning I might be persuaded to help you dig it out... just to take that stinky stuff off your hands... 😉

Mmmmmmm. Moldy gym socks!

As much as I love it, Box Elder is also one of the woods that gives me the most respiratory problems. Red Cedar doesn't even bother me but box elder.... Coughing, sinus infections, all that crap. Whooda thunk?

I cut down a large box elder recently and have been practicing turning goblets and the like from some of the branches. What do you guys think of turning box elder when still green? Any tips or advice?

Green box elder turns very nicely. Only problem is it's a fairly soft and wet wood and, as it dries, it will move quite a bit. Any figure in it will raise and sink till it's distinctly no longer flat. Once dry, it will tend to tear out if not careful. Big fan of rough turning it green, letting it dry (don't wax it or it will spalt all over the place, plus I haven't found it to check that bad when drying) and finish turning it.

Turned a vase out of Russion Olive last night. Whew! As stinky as box elder, but different! Same goes for red oak, which smells like pee and turns your tools and hands black (love it though). Going back to cherry and apple for a while for a while for a nose break.
