i am still in the market for a heavy duty lathe. i narrowed it down to two lathes, the VB36 and the SL2524, until i saw a video of the steinert maximo online. has anyone turned on one of these or seen one in the US?

What's an SL2524?

The German Steinert Maximo seems somewhat like a one trick pony if huge is its main claim to fame. You won't be able to find them on this side of the pond. Heavy duty does not necessarily mean a machine that can turn bowls that are too big to be practical. There are a number of heavy duty lathes more reasonably priced.

The VB36 is a fine lathe for bowl turning, but rather expensive and not as versatile as more conventional designs.

A former member of our turning club is selling both a VB36 and a heavy duty lathe custom made by Gordon McMullen. I have no personal or financial interest in any transaction. The owner is Francesco, 406-925-3565. they are shown in the classified section of our club site NRWG.org.

If it was me I would go with the vb36 just take a look at those bearings and spindle, yep long bed vb36 for me! ( hopefully by this time next year) if you do a search there is a long video that explains all about it just watch that and you will see what I mean🙂
