Hello,
I have heard of this book. I would like to know if the techniques are useful and if the book is worth it.

Great book and don't know of anyone who knows more about spiral techniques than Stuart Mortimer. He doe's have a few new methods that he teaches in person now but still uses all of the principles in the book. If you are going to try spiral turning - get the book for reference.

I have the book and have used it. There's almost too much info in it. You have to wade through and use what you want. The good side is as you grow there's still more info in the book for you to use. It is without a doubt the best all around reference on cutting spirals.

Buy it! You will be glad you did. As John Lucas pointed out, there is almost too much information there. But, after you put it down for a while, then start to try carving some spirals, it will all start to fall into place. I cut a few and then did not do so for about a year. After seeing Avelino Samuels' presentation about cutting spiraled vessels at the Richmond Symposium last June, I reviewed Stuart Mortimer's Book and everything fell into place. I am now carving spirals with ease and the technical stuff that Stuart presents makes a lot of sense to me.

A year ago spring I saw Stuart do a demo. I am still using what little I learn there. If I had the book, I'd be dangerous. Great guy to see work. He'll knock out a double bind fluted finial in about 6 minutes with a chainsaw file and only about three reference marks to guide him on the piece, its amazing.

If your are interested in that style of work he is the master teacher.

Hi,

I have the book and it is great. I meet Stuart last year and took a class from him that covered spiraling as well as ultrathin green hollowing (He has a DVD covering that).

After the class I helped him redesign and update his website - it's about 95% finished but has some great examples of his work. www.stuartmortimer.com

He is a great guy and does amazing stuff - I highly recommend his book.

A true spiral,

Hello,

Wyatt,

check out this website for a true spiral, (my4spiral.com).
I believe this could be considered. The only true spiral.
You can't learn this from a book.

Brilliant Graphics Lampman

That computer video on your site Lampman is fantastic. You or whoever did that certainly could teach the computer experts a thing or two.

As regards Stuart, he is a really nice chap and yes you will find both his book and his dvd 'Wet Turning With a Difference' fantastic learning aids.

Kindest regards

Paul
