Hi..all this is a great site!
Well I am thinking about purchasing this adapter for use with my Harbor Freight $79 lathe... model #45276. The lathe while on the cheap side is working quite well for simple turned spindle items that I was making. However it was missing the ability to use a chuck as none of the ones I could find had the proper thread inserts for the lathe's 3/4" x 10 TPI solid drive shaft. I found this Spindle Adapter its called a PSI Woodworking LA341018 Headstock Spindle Adapter (3/4-Inch X 10tpi to 1-Inch x 8 tpi chuck) here is the url http://latheaccessories.blogspot.com/2008/08/psi-woodworking-la341018-headstock.html Some thing I would like to do is make some small objects like tubes and little wheels something like a small wagon wheels..I need some way to shape the outside and inside. do you have any ideas on what type of chucks to use...I will be trying to turn items the size of 1/4 to 3"!
Any advice would be great!!!
Thank you for your time.

[FONT=&quot]Rick,
I just bought a PM 3520B lathe and needed 1 1/4" x 8-tpi to 1" x 8-tpi spindle adapters, as all of my accessories are 1" x 8-tpi. Here is where I bought my adapters http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wood+lathe+spindle+adapter&x=0&y=0
They are well made and run true. I also bought a 3/4" x 10-tpi to 1" x 8-tpi adapter (what you wanted) for the PM live center threads.
The PM spindle adapters are $19.62 each, and the 3/4" x 10 to 1" x 8-tpi adapter is $12.24 each.
The only drawback to these adapters is that they are not drilled (bored) through the center for use with a vacuum system, but that is easy to fix on the lathe with a drill bit in a tailstock chuck.
If your qualifying purchase is $25 or more, the shipping is free, and no sales tax.

Thanks for the reply and info Gil....I just placed a order for the 3/4" x 10 to 1" x 8-tpi adapter $12.24 not to bad..Thanks again for the amazon tip!
do you have any ideas on a good chuck thats not to expenses...Harbor freight has a 6" Wood Lathe Chuck with Key Durable chuck is constructed of one piece cast alloy steel.

Four separate, reversible jaws
3/4" x 10 TPI mounting thread

Adapter plate not included. Dimensions: 6'' Diameter x 1-1/2'' deep (2-3/8'' including jaws)
Weight: 6 lbs. 3 oz.

It says adapter plate not included I wonder what type of adapter they mean.

I did not see this before this chuck would work right on my lathe with out the adapter.
But I still need the 1" x 8-tpi adapter for other usages. Do you think this chuck would work OK..for now it's only $34.99

I do not recommend that chuck. It is designed for metal and not for wood. the jaws are independant meaning that you have to adjust each jaw seperately and you would need a dial indicator and a lot of patience to center the wood.
what you need for wood is a 4 jaw self centering chuck. They are not inexpensive although they've come down in price a whole lot. A good choice is the one sold by Penn state Industries.

As you can see it comes in 3/4x10 as well as 1"x8. They also have several other styles of chuck.

To turn wheels I hold a piece of wood in the chuck. I center drill it with a jacobs chuck held in the tailstock. The I turn the outer diameter of the wheels onto the whole piece. I then use a parting tool to cut the rough thickness of the wheel. Then turn the outer side of the wheel. Cut it off the rest of the way using the parting tool and then go on to the next one. I will sometimes use the tailstock to support the loose end while turning the cylinder.
If you need to turn the backside of the wheel make a jam chuck by turning a scrap of wood held on your chuck. Turn a hole in the wood that is a press fit for the wheel. Then pop the wheel in there and turn the backside. I find it handy to drill a hole through the scrap wood so can use your knock out bar or a dowel to push the wheel back out of the jam chuck.

Hi john ...the Barracuda Chuck, looks like what I need the price is not to bad!
Thank you for the information on turning wheels, and the chuck.

If the 3/4x10-to-1x8 adapter is in transit, I'd suggest passing on a 3/4x10 chuck, and concentrating on 1x8 for use on your next lathe when/if, because it's a more common thread pattern for accessories. The Barracuda uses tommy bars for tightening, which is OK for the limited range. But for a few dollars more, Grizzly's H6265, with auxiliary jaws H6268 and H6269, provides more diameter range (about 0.2" to 4.83" in compression for all 3 jaw sets altogether), and T-handle tightening. Although not listed as a feature, the body also has 24 (I think) index holes. It'll need a DIY anchoring system.

The Harbor Freight chuck is not a good choice, especially for woodturning.
I would pass on the PSI Barracuda Micro Lathe Chuck, as the Tommy-bar tips shear off very easily in use (poor design).
As Joe mentioned, Grizzly sells a good scroll chuck which is a copy of the VicMarc 100 (the jaws are interchangeable with a VicMarc 100 too). The 1" x 8 tpi would fit your new adapter. The H6265 chuck (which includes a jaw set), plus the H6268, and H6269 extra jaw sets will fit you out well. I have all of these Grizzly items, and they work very well, at a reasonable cost.
Have fun, and play safe.

Man so many choses....I took a look at the Grizzly H6265 ..Wow I do like having a larger diameter range size and the chose of auxiliary jaws! Thank you...Yes the 3/4x10-to-1x8 adapter is on it's way!

Thank you Joe

I agree on the Grizzly chuck. I have one along with 2 other Vicmarc chucks. It is an excellent buy. I don' t remember if Grizzly sells a 3/4"x10 insert for that chuck but Vicmarc does and it will swap out. Of course that raises the price.

I hope the 1-Inch x 8 adapter, that am waiting for has no run out or wobble once it's in place. It sounds like the Grizzly Chuck, will be the best bet ...thank you guys/gals for the info.

Am pretty sure my first Grizz chuck had a 3/4-10 insert for previous lathe. Have since replaced with 1-1/4-8 insert for present lathe. The first chuck was about $79, and the second one I got was $99, so that should tell you which model I'm talking about. Mine do not center perfectly, but close enough for the average bear.
