I was just curious if anyone in the south-central Indiana area would be interested in starting a wood turner's/woodworking group (possibly eventually form a chapter) to get together and share knowledge, and projects. Myself, I live over an hour from the nearest AAW chapter, and it is pretty much impossible for me to attend their meetings. Anyone who might be interested, let me know.

Thanks

I was born in Brownstown Indiana and my Great Great Grandfather started the Hamer Mill in spring Mill State park. However I don't live there anymore. I will be visiting the park the weekend of May 26th for a family reunion.

woodturning chapter

Scott,
I don't know where English is but we have a chapter in Holton In. We have 30+ members and meet twice a month. We are in south central just below Columbus about 30 minutes.
I also was looking for a club two months ago when I found this one. I live on the Ohio river half way between Louisville and cincinnatti. Gary

Thanks Gary, but columbus is quite a bit farther from me than Louisville. English is close to the Ohio River. an hour from louisville, and 1 1/2 hours from Evansville. I was just seeing if there was anybody else on here from my regional area that might want to meet up now and then and share our knowledge. But thanks anyways, and I might check into it and come visit your club. I am always curious to see what other woodturners, and woodworkers are up to.

Thanks
Scott

Scott:

You might try to get in touch with some of the turning clubs in the region (look HERE) and announce your interest in starting another turning club where you are located - just a line or two with contact information in their newsletter would work. There may be some members of those clubs who might find it convenient to attend your meetings, and you might get more of a response from those turners who are not on the AAW Forum here. There are lots of turners who do not spend a lot of time on the Internet...!!

Another thing to try is to distribute some announcements of a scheduled planning meeting to start up a new turning club which can be placed in hardware stores, lumber yards, woodworking shops, etc. (...even in barber shops!), where you might contact woodturners in the area. If general woodworking clubs are also around, there may be members of these clubs who might have a specialty interest in woodturning that might form a good nucleus for a startup club. Many woodturning clubs were born from "splintering" of a special interest group from within a general woodworking club.

The AAW has some resources that might be helpful in starting a club - whether it becomes a chapter or not (....but of course it would be good to be part of the AAW!). Have a look in the Members Area, or HERE.

Good luck on your efforts to start another club!

English is only 40 miles from Louisville, KY (Louisville Area Woodturners). We have a number of members who drive much further than that to our club meetings. We even have a member in Ninilchik, Alaska but he does not make every meeting of the Woodturners of North Texas. 😀

I posted this thread several months ago, and at the time I couldn't find any info on Louisville area woodturners, and I couldn't even get a good e mail address for them. I am now a member of LAW and I do get to attend a meeting from time to time. But I am still interested in finding woodturners that may be a bit closer to my location just to be able to more easily connect because LAW's schedule as far as their meetings and my work schedule are not very compatible.

Scott when we started a club around here we had just a few people who actually attended a club 80 miles or more away. We decided on a tentative introductory meeting at one of our houses and put an add in the local newspaper. That club is now up to 35 members after 7 years.

Scott,
I wrote you earlier, from the Holton,In. club. They started 3 years ago with three interested members, went to five quickly and now its well over forty getting new members every meeting.
I go to a lot of woodworking auctions and find many interested lathe turners who join our club. When you put a lot of people together who are interested in woodworking tools, there are bound to be turners who are looking for a club to join.
Just two days ago I went to a small suction and found a couple of prospective members just looking for a reason to talk to other turners.
Don't give up. They are out there. Gary

what is a suction
auction

Ray,
All auctions are suction auctions, you go there and money is just sucked out of your wallet with ease. It has happened to me many times. I have to watch myself or it happens all the time. Gary
