The OC Woodworkers along with the OC Woodturners host this exhibition. This year woodworking is in a larger building adjacent to fine arts. It's a fabulous show and there is a special exhibit of Sam Maloof's furniture made possible by Sam Maloof Woodworking with six of Sam's pieces.

Below are some photos of a portion of the exhibit showing some of my work including my large wall-mounted disc of curly ash. The last photo shows my hollow form and segmented bowl displayed with Ken Cowell's fabulous segmented vases.

Congratulations!
I sincerely wish I had vacation plans for Orange Co., Ca.
Looks like Orange County has an excellent facility for the show.
Thanks for posting.🙂

exhibition at the OC fair?

Robert,

Is the Orange County Woodworking Exhibition at the OC fair but separate from it?
I ask because California Fair rules speak of fair entries being by amateurs and I assume some of the work you show is by professional woodturners. So if the exhibition is for show and not for competition I can see how that would work. If the exhibition is also judged, how does that work given the Calif. Fair rules?

Here at the Sonoma County Fair the Winecountry Woodturners have trouble getting spectacular entries from our turners who receive an income from their turning. Instead many of these members exhibit at the Sonoma County Museum's "Artistry in Wood" exhibit each fall. This is a juried and judged show for professional and amateur woodworkers.

Thanks, Ann

A local rule

Upon further checking I discovered that amateur is defined in two ways in the California state fair rules, but is never listed in a rule. Amateur is listed in several "local rules" for the Sonoma County Fair. Thanks for helping me clarify that.

The Orange County Woodworking Exhibition is open to all woodworkers and woodturners. Club membership is not required for exhibitors by the OC Woodworkers/turners. They are an inclusive group.

I also think it is worth mentioning that the OC Woodworkers make and give 5,000 toys every year to children who might otherwise not get a toy for Christmas. They were working on some of these toys yesterday at the exhibit.

Robert,
Which toys get the best response from the children?
Our club made some cars a couple of years ago but we had no way of knowing if they were well received by the children.
Thank you.

Hi Janet,

That's a good question and I don't know the answer so I'm going to refer you to OC's site. They have a slide show of their toy program and it looks like they just make a wide variety.

I wish I could join the OC group, but they meet on the other side of town on Thursday evenings and that would mean a three hour trip with the traffic. So, I get to meet up with them at the exhibition.

Hi Robert,
It was nice meeting you at the fair Thursday.
Here is correct link to ocwoodworkers:

The OC Fair has Apprentice and Master divisions.
Apprentice is for non professionals who have not been awarded first place in a prior year. Here is the link to the CA fair rules.

Inspire

Thank you Larry,

It was good to meet you as well. Congratulations on your first place and division win. My involvement with the talented and friendly people of Orange County has been an outstanding experience in many ways.

Thanks Janet and Nick for your kind words, too.

Best regards,

Robert

Great-looking exhibition, Robert. I don't think I'll be able to get down there to see it in person, but it looks like there were some ribbons involved on your part. Congrats and well done.

Good news

Thank you, everyone.

The 2010 Orange County Woodworking Exhibition has finally come to a close. The exhibit was a great success in that it was very busy and well liked in its new location. There was an ongoing Marquetry demonstration utilizing 1/16" veneers and we had live guitar music in the exhibit on Sunday evening by a woodworker/artist who makes his own cigar box electric guitars.

But for me, the best part was having my 25" diameter turned wood piece, Radiata Fraxinus, purchased for Orange County's permanent fine art collection. This piece will be displayed in at least three venues in the next year including an exhibit in the new terminal of the John Wayne airport upon completion.

Sweet, I hope to fly into SNA and see it.
