freestanding shop or enclose the bottom of deck

enclose deck pluses: only 3 sides, concrete floor already in place, biggest problem would be roof
(probably have to take deck up to do roof)
leave sliding doors to house or scrap

I know what my wife would say - make it freestanding and leave your wood chips out in the yard!

While there may be a few plusses to the under deck idea, I personally do not think they are enough to outweigh the disadvantages: limited future expansion; extending HVAC and power from the existing room; noise and dust at the house.

The additional cost of pouring footings and a slab, as well as the fourth wall, are a small part of the total, and you gain an independent shop with plenty of power, room, and options. And don't forget that you would get to keep your deck!

The building we built in the backyard is a two story 1100 ish square foot studio - already wish we had built bigger (build bigger than you think you need)

There is also the mental advantage of creating a separate space that is set aside for just creative work, apart form the daily domestic activities. The mindset of working in dedicated space helps focus.
