Okay ,

We have a Wednesday Workshop in my shop for club members to learn to turn.

I am looking for the top ten shop rules that need to be posted in my shop.

This is what have so far.

Any help with the rules would be appreciated.

thanks

1. Instructor has final say on safety of object being turned.

2. No sanding.

3. Cleanup to start 15 minutes before close of shop.

The fewer rules you have the easier it will be to have folks follow the rules.

Rule 1 - It is never my fault
Rule 2 - Ask if it's OK do not ask for forgiveness (you will NOT be forgiven)
Rule 3 - Clean up after yourself
Rule 4 - You must read and sign the liability waver

rust rings

NO coffee cups, soda cans, water bottles etc on cast iron...
It's probably just me... Sometimes I hear equipment cry...
Fewer rules the better, but respect the tools...

okay

@ Dennis, just added that one thanks

I like all of those! I do have one I enforce..bandsaw usage is restricted to the shop owner only. 🙂

1- listen to the instructor
2- dont break any tools
3- dont break yourself
4- if you break tools or yourself while not listening to the instructor, you cant cry
5- clean up your mess
6- 911 shalt not be needed

basic rules i follow when im working... af course the insructor is me, and im the only one to listen, which i never do, so i cant ever cry 😀

oh and dont use this face 😱 while at the lathe unless your impaled/ bleeding... its a very misleading face...
happy turnings!

  1. No alchohol or drugs before or during turning
  2. Wear your face shield every time you turn the lathe on
  3. Don't leave the lathe spinning unattended

Just yell Hey Bubba watch this before doing anything. That way when you do something stupid it's already understood that an accident was about to happen.
I used to have a big board with a nasty saw cut in it hanging from the ceiling in my shop. It just said "THINK" That was to remind me that whenever I was in the shop you need your wits about you.

1. Even though you didn't have to take an IQ test to get in here, use what you brought but leave stupid in the parking lot.
2. There are no rented mules here.
3. Face protection, both physical and metaphysical, shall be worn at all times.
4. Leave your gloves in the car.
5. There will be someone standing behind you who will laugh like hell when you screw up and isn't phased by the sight of blood.
6. We have neither ice nor refrigeration here so keep all body parts firmly attached.
7. You want to do WHAT?
8. The chain saw and band saw are NOT community property and are Off Limits.
9. Do not break anything that you cannot afford to replace within 36 hours. [The term is "replace". "Repair" is on your own time.]

No alcohol to be consumed when tools are in use.

if you don't know how to use it, ASK , don't guess.

most important, have fun.

if u kill it, u fill it.

from summer camp cafeteria.

were here to have fun.

An alert mind is your most important piece of safety equipment if you are ever unsure ASK

Be aware of other students -

face shields

Bandsaw/chainsaw used only by instructor and assistant instructor

If we use chisels or carving tools - don't push any tool toward any part of your body.

I encourage dust masks when sanding

happy turning,
Al

"The" Shop Rule

Way back when, when I was a graduate student we had a very simple singular rule posted on the wall in the Physics Dept. Machine Shop, "Thou shalt not machine the machine." It seemed to work very well, no one got hurt, the shop stayed clean, and the machinery and accessories stayed in good condition. The KISS method had a lot to be said for it...then the lawyers got into it.

Don't try to make the inside of the vessel larger then the outside 🙂

If it doesn't feel or sound right, it probably isn't.

Two Rules From The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship
Oily Rags can Spontaneously Combust - Dispose of Properly
No use of power tools without another adult present.

Whenever my kids come into my shop the first thing they have to do is count their fingers. I then instruct them to know where those fingers are at at all times and to leave with as many as they came in with.

rules

Just a couple suggestions

Face shields must be on face
All tools require instructors assistants
STOP means NOW and don't move.
Listen before doing
ALL SAWS off limits to students

Hope this might help.
