Charlie, I cannot help you with the outboard turning setup. Sorry.

With regard to the chuck, did you see if there is a set screw locking your insert into the chuck body? On most chucks there is a set screw which is locked onto the threads of the insert after it is screwed into the body.

If that is not it you may need to get a bigger wrench. 😛 When I changed inserts I had to use a strap wrench to hold the chuck body and another wrench to remove the insert.

You did say Stronghold? There are 4 holes in the adapter. Two are thru holes, two are threaded. Remove the two screws from the thru holes. (that's where they are now) and put them in the threaded holes. Now, and only now, slowly tighten up the two screws, evenly, and watch the insert rise out of the chuck. Cool, huh?
Now, be sure to clean out the recess really good with a solvent. Do not wax or oil the new insert and reverse the process with the screws in the thru holes.

Now, if you've tried this and it hasn't moved, remove the screws completely, put the chuck in your headstock and, while rotating by hand, tap on the chuck with a wood mallet. This will cause it to move out of the insert, which is slightly tapered. DO NOT TURN ON YOUR LATHE, This is what they really call a fatal error. Never apply heat, but you can try cold.

Hope you're successful.

BTW, it will take less time to change than it did to read this.

slick

that was pretty slick, someone must of smiled 😀 at me because i had put the screws in the through hole correctly on the first adapter and i did not get any instructions on either adapter, old saying i rather be luckly than good

strap wrench to hold the chuck body and another wrench to remove the insert.

i may get one just to have in around in basement😀... uh studio😉

Durn, I was gonna say bring it over and let's try it out .......🙁 😉
Have fun!!!!!

Pipe wrench?

Pipe wrench?

the outboard tool rest has two large allen wrenches type bolts, my set of allen wrenches are not big enough to tighten those bolts, so without going and buying another tool i used the Pipe wrench, worked out ok 😀

Try Captain Eddie's suggestion first........he knows what he's talking about.

If it's stuck, a little penetrating oil might be of help, too.
