segmented turning

I'm new to segmented turning but yes, I would like to see a one.

Poll time. This poll will be similar to the other one. If there is overwhelming votes in support of a subforum we'll make one.

I'll "stick" the poll, which will put it at the top of the forum. The poll will be open until the voting rate subsides.

Not much happening on the forums that GT listed. Nothing against those forums, but maybe better to leave it in this main forum where the uninitiated are more likely to become interested and give it a try?

I agree with Texian. Imho, I think a sub forum would segregate the turners into smaller groups that may never mix. rRght now we are one big family where everyone feels welcom. Besides, I have enough to look at with the 4 message boards I frequent already.

Segmented = Fragmented?

Just wondering ..........

Would a Segmented Forum cause us to become ........uh, Segmented?

Wood Magazine recently shut down a bunch of its tool specific forums because the topics were so focused that they became a cyber wasteland. Their rationale for having sub-forums was due to the extremely high volume of traffic that they have on their main forums. I see the volume of traffic here as just barely enough to sustain this forum. First time visitors will be unlikely to post questions for help on a site where they don't see much opportunity for getting much feedback. I think that the way to attract new participants is to have a reasonably active discussion forum and branch into sub forums if the need arises and I think that the primary reason for doing so should be related to the volume of postings and not by having subject areas that are so tightly focused that they rarely see any visitors. If this were the first time that I visited this site and if I were confronted with a large number of sub-forums to browse, I would not be likely to search through all of them. More than likely, I would look at one or two and if they looked like death warmed over, I would write this off as not a good place to post questions or come back to read things that have been posted.

I post this with some misgivings because I don't want to sidetrack things and start a flame war. This is just me expressing my true feelings and perhaps being too brutally honest -- I don't have any ill will towards any ideas that others have about the direction that the discussion forums take, but I am giving my thoughts for what they are worth (maybe $.02, at the most). I also would like to see this forum grow to the point that sub-forums become a necessity due to the high volume of postings, and as an incidental result, interest in woodturning benefits and the AAW benefits by attracting new members.

I was away from the computer for close to 24 hours due to severe weather and spending time in the shop today. When I checked back on the main forum there were 2 sticky threads with new posts and 9 regular threads with new posts. I don't believe a total of 11 threads having new posts in 24 hours says that this forum has enough traffic to warrent splitting the forum up into a lot of subforums. I actually have to agree with one of the previous posts that this would probably kill this forum as it would give the impression of a very limited traffic flow and would actually slow down being able to check the forum as you would have to open the subforums. I know that there have been many times that updates to threads have occurred in the tips subforum that I failed to catch as I had time to view the main forum and then was called away from the computer.

At the time that this forum has 11 threads with updates in say one hour - then we will need to consider splitting the forum into sections. Until then I am really afraid we will kill the forum and could actually cause some splintering of AAW. When someone can come on the AAW forum and view only posts of their specific interests then we will see that specific interest become their driving reason for all they want out of AAW. As it is now we are all turners and even if your interest is only in a specific aspect of the field, due to reading the varied posts we can all have an understanding of the other aspects of turning.

One mans opinion.

Wilford,

I'm not concerned about a segregaters' subforum killing the main board. It could, as Malcolm points out, just as well increase message traffic from segmenters who don't follow more general turning issues. Also, don't forget that this forum is much larger than those who post. There are, perhaps, 25 people who post with any regularity and another 25 who post occasionally. However, you see threads listing hundreds or even thousands of different people who view what's being said, depending on the thread subject.

My concern is for the moderators. In order to keep trolls, spam and inappropriate material off this board, Jeff and Steve (+ whomever eventually may replace them) have to spend a fair amount of their personal time reading each and every post here. I'm a bit concerned that "sub-fora" may add more time to their personal workload beyond what they reasonably "signed up" to do.

These guys don't get paid for this, you know. 😉

I still feel it is important to be open to change. The chapters subforum was created despite resistance. It does not get many posts, but it is a good repository for info in that area.
