Any one have any knowledge, with links to books and/or web-sites that mention the early history of segmented turning?

As people might be aware, Oval, Ornamental and even Puzzle turning all go back to the late 1500's.

So the question is how far back does Segmented/Polychromic go?

"The Art of Wood Turning" By William Klenke Published 1921

There is a chapter called Segment Work. There are two projects, one is a Captain's Wheel Mirror and the other is a Serving Tray.

And all this time I thought that Malcolm invented it. What about the "ribbon form"? Anyone know of the earliest example of segmented ribbon?

Ralph, Curt Theobald researched and presented a rotation in Richmond on the history of "segmented turning". Unfortunately, because of board duties, I was unable to attend. You might contact Curt for his prospective.

Texian, as far as I know, the segmented ribbon is my invention, but it's certainly possible that someone else did it first. Steve Hogbin turned/de-constructed/reconstructed solid wood turnings many years ago and that probably (at least partially) gave me the idea.

Woodturning dates back to something like 1300 BC. So segmented turning probably started when that ancient Egyptian first thought - 'hey! I wonder what would happen if I glued all these little pieces together?'
