Is their a prior tread or other source for making segmented bowls.

Mike there are a lot of sites on the web but I suggest picking up the book The Art of Segmented Turning by Malcolm Tibbets. It discusses all the important issues and has some plans as well. I got mine from Amazon.com

John, thanks for the book plug.

Mike, in addition to mine, there are several good books on the subject. Also, Jim Rogers has a three part series of articles in the AAW journal. The second article is coming out in the next issue, but first get the last issue. Good luck (you'll never go back to chunk-wood turning 🙂 )

While I have had the opportunity to break bread with Malcom and his wife (a lovely couple I might add) and would reccomend his book, I would also reccomend that you google segmented turning and variations of that and you are likely to find a wealth of information. I like the variety aspect and the different opinions.

Mike, If you go to www.tahoeturner.com then scroll down at the bottom of the page is a Segmented Wood Turner web ring. These are numerous segmented turners with very helpful hints. Each offers a variety of information. Some of it is the same. I'm just starting out with this form of turning and love it! The design possibilities are endless. Make sure you spend a day at the Tahoe Turners site as this is the premier segmented site.

Enjoy!

Walt

More help here Mike. I have a segmented site with basic instructions and drawings. GT....

George, I gota ask, on your
page did you inlay the heraldry after the bowls were turned, or are these built-up segments, or are my eye's being tricked and those are "just" painted on.

On my website I show segmented bowls which has been woodburned and painted. I see no reason not to enchance a regular plain segmented bowl and not enhance. This can be done by carving, burning, drilling, dowells, airbrushing, open segments, feature rings and whatever else I forgot. Just completed but not turned, some vessels yet to be done as above. I will sometimes do four bowls from the same plan and change color, etc. GT
