Hi,
I’ve been including a lot of woodturning in my high school shop classes over the last 6 years. We now have five lathes in one of the school shops I teach at and four in the other school shop at which I teach. We hope to add more lathes in the future. I’ve written two grants to the AAW over the last 5 years and have been awarded the grant money both times which has been used to buy lathes and a few turning tools. The problem we are having this school year is simply that we don’t have enough turning tools to go around. Several tools are to the end of their usefulness. I asked for tool donations two years ago at SMC and this forum and received a number of old tools that turners no longer used and even one set of new bowl gouges which helped us a great deal. What I’m asking is that if any turners have some old turning tools that they don’t use we could use them. Money for the turning part of my class is nonexistent at this time. We do both bowl turning and spindle turning in my classes and use a lot of the old delta or craftsmen tools that where bought for the shop 30 years ago. The forged spindle gouges, ½†skews and scrapers, and any bowl gouges that can find. If anyone has some of these old tools laying around not in use, my students could sure put them to use. I do plan to write another grant this year, but if awarded, the money will be late in the school year.
Thanks,

Jack,

I have more than a few that I will be glad to give you. I've been waiting for a good opportunity to donate some of this stuff, glad to know that you have a need. Will sort through this weekend and let you know to make sure you're interested in what I have.

Jack,

Have you considered making some? We did that from HSS for a youth program we did for our club. Very inexpensive and straight forward to make scrapers and gouges.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Rich, any old tools can be put to great use. Steve, I belong to two local AAW clubs and hoist one of them at one of the shops that I teach at every month. As I stated in the post we have received two grants over the last five years from the AAW and plan to apply for another one this year. IF awarded a grant the money will be very late in this school year so I'm looking for some help sooner. Matt, I've made several boring bars and swan neck tools for the shop and for my students to take home, several have lathes at the house now. As far as making scrappers I would gladly make them if we had the tool steel to make them from. Any help in this area will be much appreciated by my students. My new principal is allowing me to sell some items this fall at our schools fall festival to raise some more money for the turning program. This event is at the end of October so it is still a couple months away.
Thanks
