I have turned a few segmented bowls and have been using hose clamps to date which for me is a little cumbersome. Looking for recommendations on what rubber bands others use for the clamping pressure. I only have a midi lathe so the largest ring would be around 10" in diameter.

Rubber Bands for gluing segmented rings

I have a variety of rubber band sizes from the office supply store. I never depend on just one band, using maybe 6 to 10.
A 10" ring can be quite tricky to get rubber bands on. There are methods.... Rubber bands work well on smaller rings.
I normally use a hose clamp on the bigger rings. I use the ones with a hex head and tighten/untighten with a cordless drill.

Agree with Larry on the hose clamps. Gluing small rings I drill holes around a block of wood in different size circles and then inserted nails in holes. Stretched the rubber bands around the nails. Placed the segments inside the ring and then remove the nails one at a time. Doing it one at time seemed better than the way Jerry Bennett used them me having less practice.
I have a large bag of #64 rubber bands supplied by Staples. These work well for rings up to 7-8" diameter. Warning, rubber bands requires more dexterity than band clamps, and can make a ring explode into component pieces at the speed of light. Also, rubber bands have a limited lifespan when covered with glue.
Rob, I use cable ties also. They come in various sizes, you can put them together and with the tightening thingie you can put any amount of force you want on a ring.
