Hello from the western states. Though I’ve been building up a tool collection and basic skills after building my little woodshop a couple years ago, I’m still just turning out cutting boards!

I’ll be looking to this crew to help my break out and go beyond the basics. Turning has caught my eye and I’m trying to get that started now. Though I’m starting to feel like a “wood catcher” and not a wood turner. I’ll be posting for help on that.

You can always make a chess board and turn the playing pieces that go with the board. That is a good project to learn to make the same dimension pieces and you get practice making duplicate pieces which develops muscle memory and tool techique.
 
Welcome Robb, that is a very impressive set of woodworking machines you have their! You will learn a lot from very experienced woodturners here. Happy turning.

I struggled a lot when I started, and no amount of YouTube video watching seemed to help with the catches. Not until I spent an hour with a turner and he showed me proper technique and roughed out one bowl. That one hour in person was a turning point for me.
 
Welcome, Robb. If you haven't already found us, the Seattle AAW club meets in Redmond the second Thursday of every month. Except, of course, this month, due to the Portland Symposium overlapping. Instead, we're meeting this Thursday (June 7), and have Vivien Grandouiller as our demonstrator. Guests are always welcome, and we have a lot of good mentors we can hook you up with if you are interested.
