With the advent of the web and so many popular woodturning focused websites, it seems that most of us not only belong to a local AAW chapter, but also have our favorite virtual club we frequent, support and have friends on. I run such a site and visit numerous others.

Since I haven't been to a chapter meeting in who knows how long, I thought it would be a worthwhile effort to get my virtual club & it's members working together to support the AAW Return to the Community Project this year. Here's the call to arms I posted:
________________________________________________________________
During our AAW Symposium each year, we have a "return to the community" project. This year in Louisville, we will collect Christmas ornaments. They will be delivered to http://www.nortonhealthcare.com/locations/hospitals/kosair/index.aspx Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. Each year the hospital collects ornaments and decorated trees and auctions them or sells them outright to raise money. Last year they raised almost $400,000 to help the kids in need. All AAW local chapters are urged to turn as many Christmas ornaments as they can and either bring them to the symposium or mail them to Greg Streif, 7308 Abbott Glen Dr., Crestwood, Ky., 40014 gregstreif@insightbb.com.

Now I know Woodturners Resource isn't a traditional club in the AAW sense of the word, but I feel like we have just as much if not more sense of friendship and community than any club meeting I've ever been to. With that said, I'd like to ask that anyone that is willing and able to, join me in making one or more ornaments for the project. Let's show them how cool our family in WR is. Who's with me?!

Now, after just a few days we have 16 turners joining in to make ornaments; one of them has only been turning for a month! We’re helping the cause by having links to 7 different levels of ornament projects in the Project Plans area in hopes that everyone can find a project they are capable of completing so they can take part. We’re acting like a virtual club and one member will be organizing the collection and storage of the pieces so we can present them at the symposium as a group.

My main reason in posting this after talking to Jeff, our busy admin and webmaster here on the AAW forums, is to try and inspire more "brick & mortar" clubs and possibly other virtual clubs to take up our example and support the cause. This is a great thing, the hospital raises alot of money to help the children and programs. Ornaments can be as easy or difficult as you want, anyone can turn one. If we had one ornament donated by every turner attendee to the symposium, the donation would be huge. You don't even have to attend to donate an ornament...just turn one and send it in to the address above.

Long story short, talk to you club, talk to your internet buddies, get the webmasters to post messages and LET'S TURN SOME ORNAMENTS! 😀

Thanks for posting this Chris. It is inspirational to see that virtual clubs can also be effective, especially for such a great cause.

As a side note, Ed Davidson is now the primary webmaster. In the next few days I'll get ahold of Greg Streif and see if there is updated status on the project.
