I was showing a new turner the Lyle Jamieson hallowing system yesterday, he needs to make some urns. When I tried to show him the laser, it was broken, well, the batteries leaked, whatever that liquid is, and ruined the laser. Has anybody found a nice replacement laser for this system? New guy doesn't want to go yet with the camera system... For small things and other quick projects I still use the laser... Aloha

When I was looking at systems, another turner told me if the laser had batteries that I should remove them and use a power supply. He said it was less weight and that decreased vibration movement in addition to it never going dim in the middle of a project.

search eBay for "Red Dot Laser Module". You will get sever pages to chose from. I use the the 5mW 5V modules and epoxy them into a holder on my Jamieson home built rig. I also use one in a jig that sits on the lathe bed to measure the depth of bowls. I wire up a couple of AAA batteries with a switch to power the lasers. I bought the 10 pack so I have a bunch lying around for any purpose that I dream up.

Amazon also has a large selection of various colors. $5 or less. Good luck.

Good suggestion. Thanks.

Rigging up your own power supply even to a lower power 5volt red laser in the 630-700nm wave length could be hazardous to your vision. It’s not a good idea. From experience, you do not want these lasers burning too intensely. I had a 4.5v external power supply hooked up and I started to feel eye strain in the middle of hollowing. You would think, that the cheap laser pointers can not do any damage to your vision.

Of course your not going to aim the beam directly into your eye, but stray or diffused reflected beam energy can cause damage on short term use. I noticed this reflective effect when the laser dot is on the 6mm shinny nano carbide cutter during alignment. image.jpg
After reading up on the hazards and consulting with my optometrist, I bought a specialized pair of protective eyewear for the frequency laser I use(red).

BTW, I used and replaced the standard red laser that Lyle provides without trouble for years. Caution should be exercised with other laser colors.

I purchased the over the lense version for about 80 dollars from Www.noirlaser.com

Probably the best reason to switch a camera system I've ever read! I bought a camera for less than $15, and hooked it up to a free laptop. No eye damage with that!

Why not support the woodturner that refined and made the hollowing system? Lyle is not out of line with his parts. The really cheap pointers have fat dots with poor definition around the edges.
I like and I promote Lyle's system. I would not mind a better quality laser, one that costs over $20 or more. The one that came with the system is very finicky with the threads, one cross thread and you are done. My son was collecting Lasers for a while. Some were really good quality. All are too fat to fit the holder. I tied one up with zip ties today, I'm guessing it moved, because I went thru the wall, LOL

Ok, we have a problem here... I'm colorblind. I have used Lyle's system for countless hours and if my life depended on it I wouldn't be able to tell you what color the laser is. The one I sort of used today was way stronger and maybe the same color, or not. What colors are not good? I"m assuming the cat toys are safe, LOL
In Porland I will buy a laser from Lyle, his did work for years... Aloha

I read the headlines of the volcano.....how big of area compared to island as a whole is affected???? does those plume of acid from gasses and seawater meeting dangerous for whole island.....Hawaii is several islands.....is the effected area near where Captain Cook was ate......is this his revenge?????

LOL, Madame Pele is always lurking around... I have been here for 30 years, there's always an eruption somewhere, constant... I have seen entire neighborhoods disappeared, and the famous Black Sand beach, gone under the lava... Its a very small area on the Big Island Of Hawaii, our largest Island... I have a place about 45 minutes from the latest eruption. This eruption is very active, it's huge. A friend living in my house there showed me a picture of his truck, covered in ashes... Air quality is bad downwind for many, many miles. It reaches Maui when we have South wind, or no wind, we call it Vog, really bad for people with asthma... Take a look at this live video feed, simply amazing, specially now at night.

I'm on Maui, so I'm safe. I just hope my place on the BI will make it out of this ok. Aloha

Is the area with the eruption in Volcanos National Park?????

I am a big Lyle boring bar fan as well.
My error, I should have stated laser category/class instead of color. There is red, green, yellow, blue and violet. They fire at different wavelengths. I am not an expert on laser technologies just a concerned woodturner warning of the possible hazards.
When buying replacement lasers, there are alot out there on the internet. One can easily be attracted in purchasing a “quality” laser pointer whose dot is perfectly sharp and has a range of 10 miles. For our purposes, we need one that will work at 3-6 feet. I would lean towards the lowest class(class 1) and least powerful. (Red is most plentyful in this category)

Stay safe! If your air gets bad......M-307 LOL just kidding...

I had a little trouble with one of Lyle's lasers, he sent me a free replacement. You don't have to worry about support from him.

Would a iborscope inspection camera work in this application? Delay in video?

Paul

The biggest delay is the frame rate. Some cheap cameras have a really low frame rate. Another factor is aperture time. Long aperture times also translate into low frame rate and excessive motion blurring.

Richard, video is the signal from the camera and doesn't necessarily mean that it is being recorded.

Guess I was confused by the delay in video comment. Also the main reason I laugh about becoming the household IT guy when our son moved away!

There's always some delay, but on a good video system it isn't noticeable or at least not objectionable. For our purposes the micro-miniature video cameras are generally plenty adequate since cutter progress when hollowing is roughly on the same time scale as paint drying.

It is a good suggestion! Airwave America called me to offer their help in case I needed any filtration systems and or masks for me or neighbors. I didnt have the heart to tell them the volcano is not on my island. Very nice gesture of them. I guess they are calling all their customers in Hawaii.

Update: the cheap Amazon cat toys are way to thick, I had to jury rigged them with zip ties and duct tape, got knocked off alignment and I went thru the wall. Another I ordered is also too thick , but the problem whit this nicer one, and expensive, is that you can shine it all the way to Mars , very strong, I might go blind if I stare at it for a few minutes... I will buy a few from Lyle in Portland... Waste of time and $...
