Going to refinish 6 bowls, some stained. The original sanding was rather poor, leaving sanding marks. I have used both sanding and paint remover to remove the old finish. My problem is holding the bowls, with no tenon remaining, in the lathe. I have thought of making one of those donut holders. Is there any other way?

no tenon

Vacuum chuck or a friction chuck, or a jam chuck any of these will hold the bowl and maybe if you have cole jaws. this wood work as well

also there is an article in the August Issue of Woodturner that shows how to rechuck bowls , page 21

have fun

Friction chuck and a tail will allow you to get a glue block back on the bottom. Make sure you're centered and chuck up the glue block to work the inside.

One of the other reasons I'm happy I use a mortise. I just chuck it up and work outside around the headstock, inside as is. Gouge and sandpaper, same as original to remove the finish. If they won't sell with one finish, I turn them a bit thinner and try again. Some need to be weighted to go back on the shelf in an outdoor venue, but such is life.

use the drill press

For bowls that are turned green and warp, I use the drill press for sanding. Lower the quill and lock it, put in the pad, and sand away. It works pretty well for regular bowls, but works great for natural edge. You can concentrate in single area, and not worry about rounding the edge.
