Our club is looking to improve our video equipment including the ability to record from the mini camera as well as the main camera.

Are there any clubs out there that currently do this and if so how do you handle the switching and the recording from dual inputs.

We currently have the ability to swithc from sources and display either of the two views on a screen via a projector. However the only view being recorded is the one from the main camera. The mini camera has no recording ability or audio.

Keith we have the switcher on our clubs equipment, but right now I can't tell you what it is that we have. If I have time to do so I'll go by the club tomorow and try to get the information and pass it on to you.
We are lucky in that one of our members is a photojournalist that has worked for the local tv stations and now teaches at a collage, he was able to get everything set up before I joined the club.
Stay tuned.

Our club uses a simple low cost switch box which has the downside of not synchronizing the video from the various cameras being used. The cost of an electronic switcher that provides synchronization for the various video inputs was way outside of our budget. A momentary frame roll is a small price to pay compared to the high dollar equipment that gets minimal use.

I would probably use a video capture device from the switcher to a laptop.
Have a separate audio feed to the capture device so that the sound does not cut off when you switch to the mini camera.

We have 4 cameras that goes through a quad processed that has 1 output and can be recorded on a DVD recorder as well as displayed on the TVs. We use a security quad process for the viewing/recorded as well as a 2nd one the we can see the 4 cameras with so the camera operator can selects the best shot for the action on the lathe.

What equipment?

Our club needs to do a better job than what we can accomplish with just one camera. I have seen photos where clubs are using what appear to be miniature surveillance cameras. Looking online it appears that these generally give 380 lines of resolution. What does that mean in practical terms. Doesn't seem like it would make any sense to go to the trouble if the result is marginal as to quality. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

The quality of the cheapie cameras is marginal, but usually better than just one camera. The surveillance type cameras usually have a low frame rate in addition to fewer scan lines. These days, you can get HD (720) cameras for a reasonable price.

I belong to 5 clubs and do the recording at most of them with a Sony DCR-SR82 which has a 60gb Hard Drive in it that can store around 17 hours of high resolution video but not HD Video which I don't think is needed. I really like this camera because it has a mini hot shoe on top which allows me to put on a zoom microphone, a light or a blue toothe microphone with a snap on Mic for the presenter. I then plug into external monitors/TVs. As for building DVDs from the presentations I was using Adobe Elements but found it to be buggy and slow. I just started to use powerdirector from Cyberlink and love it. As for the camera setup I have it on a Tall Tripod about 7 high on Wheels so that I can move around easier. One of clubs we have 2 monitors, 2 cameras with overhead boom and a switch box into a Hard Drive Recorder. I have used the Recorder to build the DVD so I'm not sure how that works.
