I don't have access to a lot of wood, so much of what I have is limbs roughly 12 inches in diameter with off center piths. I tend to harvest bowl blanks out of the reaction wood, simply because that's where the deepest and often widest section of the log is.

Is there a problem using reaction wood? I've read that it cracks more readily in the drying. Any precautions I can take? I soak all my rough-outs in alcohol. Will that help?

No problem with using the reaction wood as long as you mill out the pith and wax the ends. Trunk wood is always better if available (more stable) but ya use whatcha got.
