Since the reeves drives are tough on belts, it might be time to take a look at yours...

This was timely as my belt is starting to make a fair amount of noise.

I find that the old belts also have a very detrimental effect on the speed control since the reeves drive is dependent its full thickness to achieve its lowest speed.
