After a few days of not using the finish,it builds up a layer of thick waste on the top, inside the can.Is there a way to store it ,or block the air from getting to it? Thanks in advance

I've had better luck with the following methods:
  • Store the container in the freezer. The cold stops the polymerization (skin formation). Just let it defrost for an hour or so before using.
  • Add glass marbles to bring the liquid level back up to the top and eliminate as much air as possible from the container. This is an old photography darkroom trick. I've found inexpensive marbles in the cookwares section.
Another method that I haven't had a chance to try yet is to transfer the varnish to an old wine bottle (properly labeled of course) and use a wine vacuum saver to remove the air. I found the wine vacuum saver kit in Bed Bath & Beyond. I'm sure other stores carry it as well.

Turn the can upside down between uses. Can lids don't seal as well as people think. With the can upside down the finish will seal any openings preventing air exchange and subsequent curing of the finish. I have had very good success using this method with Rockler's gel polyurethane. A word of caution, place the upside down can on a piece of wax paper as some of the finish may leak out and can might be glued to the surface. DAMHIKT

Good luck.
