I'm making up an order for CSUSA, and am re-supplying my inventory with some power lock discs. I see a special flex edge power lock holder available that I wasn't aware of previously. I don't know if this item has been in the catalogue all along, or if sometime since they started making the flex edge discs, it has been added. The item I'm enquiring about is described as a flex-edge disc holder, but from the picture I see, there is no real difference between this new disc holder, and the older ones.

I have been using the standard power lock discs since the mid/late 1980's, and when they first began making the flex edge discs, I've been using the same rubber holders that are standard for the regular power lock discs for both types of discs......I haven't seen any problem using them this way. Used in this manner, it seems to satisfactorily accomplish the objective of sanding in a limited curve.

My question for you is can you tell me what it is that's different about the two power lock disc holders?.....the one made specifically for the flex edge discs, as opposed to the standard disc holders. If you can manage showing a picture that illustrates the difference, I'd be appreciative of your efforts to show me. (us! 😀 )

Thanks

It's smaller in diameter than the standard, so the flex can flex without being impeded by the backing. Get one, because the standard 1" mandrel is really too small for proper use on the 2" flex disks.

Remember that the flex induces greater drag, so be gentle or the flex edges can overheat just like a paper on stiff velcro back. When you're used to the prolonged life you get from the non-flex, it's a sort of rude awakening.

A good source for sanding mandrels and supplies

I encourage you to take a look at: www.thesandingglove.com web site. They have a ton of great sanding supplies and accessories. The owner, Bruce Hoover, is an excellant turner and teacher and really understands the needs of woodturners.

MM......thanks, but I have been using some 1 1/2" and 2" disc holders for both styles of 2" discs, and these are working fine.....have been doing this since the flex edge discs were first introduced some time in the 1990's. If you were using the power lock discs back then, you might recall that the power lock discs were once offered in 1 1/2" diameters, and I've still got a good supply of the 1 1/2" disc holders. If the diameter of the disc holder is the only difference, then I've got that covered already......and won't need to purchase any more disc holders! 😀

If you read the description in the link I gave, you'll see it's not real clear as to whether there is a difference in the composition or construction of the two types of disc holders......and, this difference, if there is one, is what I was/am trying to find out.

"The Sanding Glove" sells for $16.95 - I use a garden glove with a piece of velcro stuck on a couple of fingers. Works fine; costs less.

Diameter only difference, OD. You should be fine.

If you've got tight, or really sloped circumstances, like some goblets, you can go to the 1" to get in the spot.

OK, thanks MM......if only difference in recommended disc holders is their diameter, it looks as though I've had that base covered all along! :cool2:
