A friend who saw one of my previous open segmented things asked if I could do bigger. Now that I have 4 under my belt, I just knew that I was experienced enough to tackle anything. ;-) 🙂

I did this in some old 2 x 4's, and finger joint milled down, figuring that when it blew up, I would only have lost my hours and not nice wood. When it didn't blow up, I thought that maybe I should have used nicer wood.

I'm open to all advice from the more experienced among you. My friend likes the pic, so I may be stuck doing another one or two. I can use any help that I can get.

Looks surprisingly good for 2x4s, well done. Maybe you can dress it up with a stain or some pyrography?
 
Greg: Tks. At some point after its use as a model has expired, I'll put some colour to it. I put sanding sealer on it yesterday to help in an even coat of something later on.
 
Very nice turning! My question on wood here- what about fire hazard? I have thought about similar things but hesitate on the liability issue. Any help is welcome.

John: I don't know exactly what the guy who is interested in these things intends to light it with. LED's come to mind. Having said that, I've seen many wood lamps and lamp shades at wood shows, so I would guess that there are options. I think that you are right to be concerned/cautious, though.

Just lost interest in doing them, I guess.

Some of the "crazy ideas" have been replaced with better crazy ideas! This past several years have been great ones for my turning, and I'm spending more time out in the shop than I ever have.......that's a priority for me! 😉
