My Daughter turns one year old this week. I turned her a rattle already, and she has used it well. Any suggestions on what dad might be able to make her?

David I usually make 4" mirrors but occasionally I make 3" mirrors for smaller kids. If you want I'll send you a 3" mirror so you can build a hand mirror. If interested send me an e-mail with your address. I'll get a mirror in the mail.

Teething rings made of a good clear, clean hardwood are really fun as well. Just a 2-3 inch ring sanded very smooth and no finish. Kids will chew and suck on them and they love it.

Oh I also turned my Daughter some bracelets, which she breaks occasionally but I can make more.

The wife and I were already talking about making her a step stool. I do like the idea of the four legged stool though, thanks.
Lee Valley have 3" bevelled mirrors for $5, probably less than what you could ship to Canada, I do appreciate the offer and suggestion. It'll be the next project I do for her, multi axis too 😀
The rings are another good idea too, she has chewed the rattle up pretty good and the coffee table looks like the edges are getting textured by a beaver 😱

Strings of beads

My kids enjoyed big strings of beads- each a little different, about an inch around. I used a nylon string with a knot in between each bead. They chewed it, pulled it, swung it around, who knows what. After they destroyed it, I restrung it with a longer string with a bead handle and they used it as a pull toy. Maybe turn the front bead to look like a snake or alligator head.

A RollyPolly is the absolute best turned toy for a 1 year old.
Don't have a picture I can find
The only caution is some children view it as hammer, shot put, chew toy.....

It is two wheels (disks). 4.5 x 3/4 joined by three 1/2" diameter cross spindles 4.5" long
These are glued into 1/2" deep mortise holes drilled evenly spaced on a 3" circle on the two wheels
A chance to use your index wheel.

Each of these cross spindles has a loose noise making spindle on it.
The clacker spindle is 1" diameter and has a 5/8 inch hole drilled in it so that is slides over one cross spindle
And is trapped between the other two cross spindles.

I usually turn beads on the clacker spindles and make them from tropical hardwoods that seem to have a musical quality.
The beads help them make more noise when The hit the other clacker spindles.

Measurements need not be exact. I custom measure Clacker spindle. It must be long enough to strike the opposite cross spindles and shorter than the opposite wheel edge by about an1/2 inch of so.

I finish this with walnut oil as it is edible

Diagram is and inside view of one of the wheels. Blue are the cross spindles and the red is one of the clacker spindles.

I have done a few bowls to celebrate the birth of children to people I know......If you did one from Father to daughter, it would be a very special thing for this child many years from now.......:cool2:

I have made a toy tug boat with a music box inside. The kids love it, but after hearing "Somewhere out there" 6 million times mom and dad don't speak to me. Win Win! I've made 6 of them so far hard to get the mechanisms now since the San Francisco Music Box Company went out of business.
