It is my understanding that AAW insurance doesn't cover members giving woodturning instruction that is not a part of a chapter activity. Nor does it cover professional or others who are NOT AAW members if they give a demonstration at an AAW meeting. First, please correct me if I am wrong. Second, it is now required that a binding contract between a demonstrator (even if they are AAW members) who accepts money for the demonstration, and the chapter must exist. My question here is who does this contract get sent to. Last question (or issue). I teach woodturning lessons and classes that are NOT AAW activities for which I charge a fee. I am sure other professional turners do this also. If you fall into this category, what do you do about liability insurance? What kind of insurance do you have, and what company issued your policy?? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Walter,
The simplest answer to your question about the chapter contract is BOTH parties should have and hold a copy, and should maintain a file of them in the event one must be shown to the Chapter's insurance company to meet the policy requirement.

As far as what the AAW insurance covers or doesn't, your question should be addressed to the AAW. You will find detailed information on the AAW home page under the "Resources & Programs" drop-down menu where you will also find the ability to obtain personal liability insurance at group rates. You can also call the AAW office in St. Paul.

In reply to part of your question, Walt, if you are doing a demo at a club then you need to know that not all clubs have their liability insurance through one of the AAW plans. Our club moved to a new larger facility at the same time that the AAW insurance rate problem reared its head. To meet the needs of the building owner, we needed a more comprehensive policy anyway. Most of our programs are done by demonstrators that are within a few hours drive and we pay travel expenses plus a token honorarium. We have no requirement for a written contract. The other part of the deal is that our club pays back the favor when one of our members does the program at the other club.

Not so easy to find.

I did search the site and ran into dead links - However eventually finding a link to a form for individuals who might want to carry their own insurance. It is

For others who might be looking for it.

Walt, at least the aaw insurance we have does not cover an event in a home. we have demos at a business on private property. I was told no go. So we now pay the business for its use. Of course we hope to never have to do anything about it. We will take a harder look at the policies available this coming year. At my house I took out a rider on my home owners insurance. Interesting kicker is our meetings and some demos are held at a commercial business. Its in a biz park but the fellow owns the land and building. Anyway our club is going to dig a bit deeper. One member did look into a policy but its cost was more than we have ever brought in. We also needed a two day policy and the cost was so much we cancelled the event.
