Does anyone have any experience with or know where I might see some reviews on the Grizzly lathe. Specifically the G0462. Seems like it has some pretty good features at a very reasonable price, however, I am old enough to know that generally you get what you pay for, but sometimes there are functional items as very good prices as well.

Thanks for your input. I am a newby to turning)

Here?

My take. It's NOT a 2HP motor, the amp draw is only 15amp (ish), it takes about 22amps on a 120 circuit to get 2HP (Grizz, like many makers, sometimes hype the horse power)

600 RPM is too high for bowl roughing, that means you need to bandsaw or chainsaw your bowl blanks "round" before mounting

I like a bigger head then 1x8. My Jet Mini has a 1x8 head. My big lathe is 1-1/4x8

Tool rest "extensions" are not what I think of as safe

My opinion, the Jet 1220 (with extension) and Delta 46-460 are good lathes too look at.

BTW, I don't dislike Grizzly, I own a Table-Saw, a Band-Saw and a sanding station, all in Grizz Green. I also own tools in Shop-Fox White (their line that is sold via other outlets)

Our club just bought 4 Jet 1642 lathe's. I think they are on sale right now, might check with your local distributer.

What they said, especially the weakness of the tool rest extension. And the tailstock doesn't look very impressive, either.

It seems to be an overgrown version of Harbor Freight's 34706, which was once sold by Grizzly under their own model number (G5979), but not now; also sold as MC-900 in Australia. Aside from the larger swing, the only improvements I see are that the motor doesn't protrude into the work space, and the G0462 has cast iron legs vs. sheet metal.

16-inch swing might be a little ambitious for your first lathe, but you could grow into it.

FWIW, you could get the HF34706 for about half the price of G0462. I have two of the 34706, one of which is undergoing repairs initiated by poor lubrication access.

One of the woodworking magazines had a review of lathes a few years ago, including one or more of the Grizzly lathes. I'm sorry I don't have better details, but you could look on the Powermatic or Nova sites under 'Reviews' and find it. If I recall correctly, they pointed out a couple of concerns with each of the lathes, including the Grizzlies. You could get some idea what you'd be getting and maybe whether it's the right one for you.

PS Just noticed someone is selling a Jet 1442 on the Want Ad board, they're up near Chicago, and it's very low priced.

That was Fine Woodworking.

The Nova 1624 came out as "best bargin" and the PM3520 came out as "best overall"

Woodcraft had the Nova 1624 on sale, until 1 Nov
