I am always dismayed by the .....

... short-sighted and ignorant attitudes many have about the AAW. This logo rumor mongering is just another example of how a few individuals can send widening waves of disinformation as they pursue their own agenda thru a public forum. It is a socialogical fact that this generation of Americans has not been a generation of joiners and doers, but would rather "let Joe do it." Look at what has happened to memberships of long standing organizations such as Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. and how membership is a fraction of levels from 30 yrs. ago. Also typical is the fact that perhaps 10% of that membership is willing to actually work for the benefit of these worthy organizations. The interests of woodturners world wide have been championed by the existance and efforts of AAW, and yet some consider a quarterly magazine to be the only benefit of membership. I have been a member for 19 yrs. and a founding member of 2 chapters, attended 12 Symposiums and demonstrated at 5, and travel each year to demo at several of those affiliated chapters. These chapters exist because of the AAW, and serve as both a beginner and continuing education resource not available elsewhere. I know that the "gray panthers" that make up most of the turner demographics today have varied interests in turning, but mutual support must be centralized to have a viable voice in this big wide world. It's also a fact that diversity can be a seed of fractional and factional events, which happens to be another normal aspect of human nature, and that to many "change" is a “4 letter word?” No large organization can be all things for all people, and finding middle ground must be done thru internal efforts of a structured organization. Taking potshots from the outside is a pointless exercise, so those disenfranchised individuals are tilting at windmills rather than providing constructive efforts at improving benefits within an organization, for the long term betterment of all.

Bill, thanks very much for your prompt attention in addressing the concerns of the members! I trust this will provide the information needed to put the rumors to rest.

I thought the new issue was interesting, and succeeded in serving a large segment of turning interests and skill levels.

Bill Haskell, Bonnie Kline, Malcolm Tibbetts, the Lacer family, personify what the AAW is.
The local turning chapters are so much fun to visit. The common theme is sharing ideas boosting skills, mentoring, and sharing a common interest. The unfortunate Sinicism and attacks that frequent this forum do not represent values of the AAW or it's members. I for one, would celebrate a heavy hand from the moderators here to delete insightful posts, suspend disruptive users, to create an atmosphere that will attract more members to participate.

No Sean,
that is not what I am saying.
Just as we have the freedom of speech, we have the freedom of association.
Sawmill creek and WOW are both examples of forums that have animated discussions with differing opinions that don't degrade into personal attacks.
The most interesting threads are the ones when people don't agree. They debate, and they keep it civil.

I think that I would welcome insightful posts, which sometimes seems to be a rare commodity in short supply in Internet forums. I also strongly support the forum rules regarding rude and malicious behavior. I am glad to see that the moderators exercise good and fair judgment rather than acting in a heavy-handed manner.

Never heard of "Sinicism" -- must be some new cult.

There has been a large reaction to several AAW matters recently that I would like to address. It is difficult and inappropriate to go into personnel and personal matters in public, but I will attempt to answer the concerns that have been raised.

The following links contain my letter, in pdf: http://woodturner.org/news/presidents_letter.pdf
and in word: http://woodturner.org/news/presidents_letter.doc

Bill Haskell, President
American Association of Woodturners

Bill, Thank you for the letter and the expressions of concern. I wholeheartedly agree that this matter was wrong to begin with and rapidly developed into a damaging string of mis-information. I do suggest, however, that there needs to be a person designated by The Board, who is empowered to respond on this web site with the appropriate response to ill-gotten rumors, inuendos, etc. The Internet is upon us all and the speed of its information cannot be denied. Therefore, the speed of the response from The Board also needs to be at the speed of light. Cutting this sort of thing off at the ankles is better than letting it develop to a head-chopping necessity. Philip Duffy

Thank you, Bill, for a very presidential response.

I couldn't think of the right word either. Maybe "inciteful" would be closer, because "insightful" would be welcome, as said.

.... Maybe "inciteful" would be closer ....

Interesting, ... although we can create an adjective from a noun by adding the suffix "ful", I think that it would be pushing the grammar envelope a bit too far to create an adjective out of the verb "incite" by adding the suffix "ful". 😀

Larry will have to speak for himself on this one, of course. Maybe it was just a tangled combination of "insidious" and "unsightly." I still can't think of the right word. Where's my thesaurus?

I apologize to Larry because I was confused about what he meant. After reading his second post again, I realized that he did not mean that he was against discussing controversial subjects.

I did not see the squabbling that apparently went on while I was out of town for a week. Those things seem to crop up on almost all internet forums from time to time, but thankfully, turners seem to be more civil than many other groups.

Joe-how about "combative" or inflamatory??? Came to me while mindlessly sanding😀 Gretch

I have discovered something even more mind numbing than sanding ... woodburning an intricate repetitive pattern that completely covers a bowl ... inside and outside. I may lose my sanity before I am finished with this project ... and if so, I may try woodburning again on an even larger bowl.

And everything will smell like that for days.
