At the symposium I will be giving a presentation about the new AAW software which will be deployed in the June/July timeframe. The current plan is to do this 30 minute presentation during the member/board meeting. That will be:
Thursday June 22, 7:00-8:00
General Membership meeting in Combs Chandler Room

Software
- outline of the new software
- rationale for why we are doing it
- brief how-to use it
- outline of benefits resulting from the new software

In addition, I will work with Ed and post info on the website:
- the presentation
- dedicated webpage for Questions and Answers
- email box to handle questions

So will you have an online presentation at some point, for those of us not going to the symposium? 😕

Yes, that's true Jim. Once the presentation is done (i.e. after the symposium), it will get posted on the website. I expect lots of questions about how to use the software, etc. And as we bring up the new software I'll be glad to answer all questions.

Jeff, thanks for all you have done to make our cyber space a more inhabitable universe. We are literally light years from where we were just few years ago, thanks to your hard work. I look forward to seeing your new package.
David

Thanks for the kudos. You'll see me walking around at the symposium with a great AAW board member shirt! 🙂

Summary of the software:
  • online membership registration/renewal which can access your personal info (address, etc) from previous year
  • password protected area of website via members-only login
  • online symposium registration using info from previous year
  • symposium registration can optionally include symposium polo shirt, exhibition catalog, etc for extra fees
  • online voting for board members
  • online shopping cart to replace existing stuff (webpages & order form)

That's a summary. I'll fill out more details with the presentation and the Q&A webpage.

Unsolicited suggestion: AAW videos for Members Only

Jeff,

Your software upgrade list looks challenging, and you did not ask for any other ideas but I wanted to throw this idea in anyway for some future consideration, even tho this may not be the time or place to do so.

The WoodworkingChannel.com has bits and pieces of symposium videos, often at very odd times (i.e. when I am sound asleep.) Would the AAW "members only" feature you describe provide an opportunity for video on demand for members, or alternatively a rotating schedule of broadcast videos? This may be daunting technically compared to the limited downloads now available. Maybe it could be sub'd out to the woodworking channel. But something like this would greatly enhance the value of the AAW site and its educational mission. It seems odd to me that these AAW videos are available elsewhere, but not on the AAW site. It doesn't have to detract from the sale of videos, in fact it could promote such sales if that in fact is an objective.

Thanks for your good work,

Jerry Hall

That would be really cool if it was possible to download symposium demos on-demand (or scheduled streaming). It's probably not possible in the near future, but long-term it would be really cool to have that available.

Jerry - you and I are of like mind. This project got proposed and accepted back in July of last year. Once it gets implemented then we can start extending and exploiting the software. I have already proposed the very same video concept to the board and they all agreed it was a good idea.

The current schedule is the software will get implemented thru July. Then after we ensure the basics work, we can consider where to invest time and money. We already have one of our members doing some prototype video work specifically targeted at this area. I don't visualize the final project as being similar to the Woodworking Channel since that is a bandwidth hog.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let's get the basics accomplished and then we can consider what will be done in August. I'll share ideas here and also solicit feedback when we get to that point.

Walk before you run.....

Jeff, Thanks for the encouraging response. Building the foundation first is often a good idea..... Jerrry
