a friend I introduced to turning just purchased a 1973 Powermatic 90. He received the tail stock but it is missing all the parts Handle screw and the part with the taper. He is looking online and hasn't found anything. Any suggestions ???

Have you tried contacting Powermatic or their agent there may be an old one siting in a corner some where or an alternative that can be used just a thought

Go to OWWM.org (Old Woodworking Machines) and check out the BOYD (Bring out your dead) link. Its a place where members can place an ad for parts they want to buy or sell. Do a search on Powermatic 90 and you will find numerous articles on how to rebuild and repair the lathe. Their sister site is called vintagemachinery.org and they have reprints of the manual and parts price lists. There is also a thread at OWWM.org titled "Powermatic 90 Time Study" that details the changes that were made to the lathe during its long production run. The tailstock was changed in the late 60's but if your friend's is original it is the last version. I own three Powermatic 90's and think they are still great lathes for the money.

Edit -

It looks like the quill is still available for $112 through Powermatic. Here's the link

The quill lock is available in limited quantities for $9.99. Here's the link

The handle is available for $55.86 but I'd call to see if that isn't a misprint because it sold for $9.08 in 1982 and used to be solid metal. Here's the link

Glad I could help. If your friend becomes an AAW member be sure to tell him about the Powermatic 90 group I just started. Also, have him check out OWWM.org for more information on his lathe.

He doesn't need to be an AAW member to participaate in the forum or the community area which is just a user organized subset of the forum. The only requirement is to register for the forum which is open to anybody, not just AAW members. The AAW forum is a separate entity from the AAW web site.
