Hi everyone,

Been a while and a tough year but good to be back on the forum. I posted a couple composite pix of a "victrola" I made for my dearly beloved for Valentine's Day. It's a music box with a little keepsake tray. A bit of context:

There is this room she calls her "whimsy room" that is unlike the rest of the house. A couple of the pictures give you the idea So I try to make things for her that go with that whole idea (sort of like the Vince Leman "Dust" furniture). The TV cabinet is one I made for her birthday so that's sort of how the whole room is.

Anyway, this is a representation of an old Victrola. The stem on the side winds it and the little turntable "arm" is the stop mechanism. To play, one lifts the arm and puts it on the record and that releases the little spinner on the movement.

The movement is a nice, 36 note Swiss. The song is one of her favorites "From this Moment" and the 45 on the turntable is that record.

The horn is a segmented piece (and I know the segmenters out there will say that I have serious grain orientation issues 😀. The wood was from a 150 year-old house we tore down and is old cypress that was cut on site at the time the house was built. The brass piece is just some tubing I cut, epoxied and polished (Beall buff with tripoli).

The red color is a dye and the rest is clear coat (except the horn interior, which is appliance epoxy spray).

Again, my apologies to those of you who know how to take photos (speaking of which, I just got a set of softbox lights and a background and tripod so things are looking up there!)

So anyway, there it is. She loves it but she's not a turner, so in the interest of improving my skills I would welcome any and all advice and insights. Thanks, and Happy Mardi Gras!

Sometimes imagination is the greatest component of creative instinct......and, with that little gem, I'm not sure if it outshines your execution! 😀

Welcome back Mark........

Well I'll take that as very high praise indeed, Odie. Thanks very much! And it's good to be back. Health issues, work (which I truly love to be honest), and dumb a@# daughter issues have been eating my lunch, but looks like the dust has settled and I can get back to what really matters. Turning 😀

Mark,
Nice gift for a special occasion.

Thanks Al. By the way, will you be doing any of the kids' workshop instruction this year in Pittsburgh? If so, I'd like to let John Ellis know that I'd like to be a volunteer in your classes again (I learned at least as much as the kids).

Mark, no youth classes for us this year. We appreciated your help last year.
The Youth folks have a terrific line up.
I'm sure this year's instructors would appreciate any help you or other turners out there would be willing to give.

I think the order is changing some but the classes will be:

1.Joe Ruminski. Introduction to Woodturning.
2. Kip Christensen. Ice cream scoop.
3. Barry Gross . Pen
4. Steve Cook. Yo-yo
5. Larry Miller. Decorative rim bowl
6. Barry Gross. Kaleidoscope
7. Joe Ruminski. Turned box
8. Kip Christensen. Christmas Tree Ornament
9. Steve Cook. Yo-yo
10. Barry Gross. Pen

Thanks Al. I also did a session in Joe's class so I'll see about him again too. What I really appreciate about it is that it will help me with teaching skills for my grandkids. The eldest is still only 6, but sooner or later they'll be in the shop (they are now but the only "tools" they use are a broom and dustpan 🙂

These classes provide a lot of ideas on working with kids. The volunteers can see what works, get project ideas. The three times we have done kids classes at the AAW, I meet someone who is helping because their clubs have kids classes and they are looking for projects and a sense of how they might teach the classes when the get home.
The biggest problem we had starting out was getting set of class projects and the cut sizes for the blanks. I had some folks to ask. And did a lot of trial runs at home.

Paramount for the class, success is the 12+ volunteers who make it possible to have a class of 25.
When Sherry and I taught kids classes at MD hall we kept the size to 5-6.

The Victrola : Absolutely Beautiful Piece!

Mark you once commented about one of my pieces and I was very flattered by it. But after seeing this I believe it is I, that should be complementing your work because this piece is really incredible. Very creative and Beautiful!

Hey Breck. Thanks very much! But I remain humbled by your work, and especially the fine detail of your pieces.

I'm very glad to see you back and hope this year is better.

Anyway, this is a representation of an old Victrola ... so in the interest of improving my skills I would welcome any and all advice and insights. Thanks, and Happy Mardi Gras!...[/QUOTE]

Beautiful and exceptionally inventive. My advice is to keep doing what you are doing.

Bill, thanks. It's good to be back. And I truly appreciate your encouraging words!

Mark, I hope that you don't mind that I edited your post to fix a problem with the quote BB code ... there was a missing [noparse]
[/noparse]
tag that caused things to be jumbled. I didn't add or subtact any words in your post although I felt like I should add additional kudos for such a clever music box.

Thanks Bill. I should have checked the tags. And thanks for the kudos!
