Has anyone had a problem with the AAW Digital app? It works well for me on my old Samsung tablet running android 4.2.2 and my iPad, but has continual log in problems on my HTC Desire 610 phone running android 4.4.2.

The St Paul office have been very helpful in trying to resolve the issue but I still can't log in on the phone. Have tried using another android phone and works OK on that so it looks like my phone/OS is not liked by the app.

I think the app is a great idea and is ideal for reading whilst on the train or whatever so I don't want to miss out!

All suggestions welcome - including get a new phone!

Thanks

David

I'm not familiar with the AAW Digital App. What is it used for(reading the American Woodturner journal or something else)?

Bill, this is the new app for viewing the Journal on our tablets or phones. Letter sent out from St Paul December 1st:

"We are happy to announce that the American Woodturner journal is now available in an interactive digital format that can be read on Apple and Android mobile devices. There are already five issues available and ready for your viewing pleasure!

The electronic version, better known as the AAW App, has been designed especially for iPads and Android tablets, and complements the printed edition of the journal. It presents superb interactive content and offers direct links to a wealth of online content, including videos and woodturning resources.

The AAW App is free for download and installation for AAW members, and issues of American Woodturner are free for download with applicable AAW App login credentials.*"

Works fine on my tablet and various other phones but not on my new HTC!!!! - hence the posting of this thread.

The only problem I had with it was that it looks for my email address and username (which is my email address)...instead of password.
When I make the assumption that it is looking for password, it gives me an incorrect password error. (which I thought confirmed my assumption).
When I figured out that it really is asking for Username and Email address and put the same value in both fields, I got right in.

I must have not noticed that email message. I view the journal on my iPad 3 and usually read the journal using the Apple iBooks app, but I sometimes just read it as a PDF. I haven't seen any problems with doing it the "old fashioned way", but perhaps I don't know what I am missing.

A feature that I would like to see added is the use of active links when a web reference is given in an article or in an advertisement. Also, hot links within the journal (such as linking from the TOC to articles) would be a nice touch. Both features are easy to implement ... I did it when I was the newsletter editor for my woodturning club.

Hi,
The way you explain it is the way the login to the app has been set up. The username/email address works fine for me as well on the iPad and a Samsung tablet but not on my HTC phone for some reason.

St.Paul have given me a new username to try so I'll try a login later today (it's 6pm UK time).

yes...but if the username is the same as the email address...and it never asks for the actual password...it is not very secure. Also, the error when you get it wrong should not be "incorrect password" if you are not entering a password.

I found my email from about the first of the month. Trouble is ... the email address is for my desktop computer. I have a different service provider (and different email address for my mobile devices). I could forward the email, but that might not work if I need to have my current email address accessible from my mobile devices.

Bill, I do the same as you and prefer it in a PDF in iBooks even though I still get the paper copy. I think the APP does have embedded links in the articles. I have not downloaded it. Maybe it is to get a round some of the quirks of viewing the site on an iPad or Android tablet and eventually the APP will do more than just the AWW? It would seem that this forum would be an appropriate place to talk it up and provoke some discussion, rather than just an email broadcast announcing it.

I installed the app just to see what all the hoopla was about. There are lots of warnings in the AAW instructions about paying close attention to clicking on the correct options or else you will wind up paying $9.99 for an issue that you are entitled to get for free. After reading all of the dire warnings, I almost felt like I was walking through a minefield.

Having the active links is nice. That could also be implemented in the PDF version. Despite not having the hot links, the PDF version has the advantage of better navigation tools such as "return to previous view", page scrolling, single page view, jump to a particular page, etc.

Anyway, the app is working fine on my iPad 3. I haven't tried it on the iPhone or other devices. My preference is looking at the paper copy ... I have never received a "Battery Low" warning while reading the paper copy.

Update:

I have now taken my HTC phone back to my supplier,s tech people. It seems that this model is well known for having software issues making it incompatible with many apps, not just the AAW one. HTC say they cannot update the phone from android 4.4.2 so when contract expires later this year I,ll switch to an iPhone.

AAW Digital app works a treat on this new iPad so one problem resolved.

Thanks to Jane in the AAW office for her help and patience!
