Went to the mailbox yesterday and there was my magazine in a poly bag with a note from my mailman stating that there was no lable on this magazine and that if I was not interested to give it back to him and he would send it back. A lot of people moan about the postal service but they got me my magazine. He is a new postman and I'll look for him today to find out why he thought it might be mine.😀

hah! You must get a lot of catalogs or something! I think its great that the carrier knows you that well. I know mine is quite friendly, and certainly doesn't fit the "going postal" stereotype that so many of us have.

Perhaps your postman is as familiar with what you receive in the mail as mine.

One day I saw him pull into the driveway while I was in the shop so I went to greet him. As he got out of the van he said, "No wood today!"

I asked him how many people on his route received wood in the mail. He said, "You are the only one and definitely the only one who has received a log wrapped in brown paper."

I am like Michael. The mailman told my wife I am the only one in town that he knows of that gets wood in the mail. He also knows Packard Woodworks, CSUSA, Penn State and Arizona Silhouette and told my wife he knows those are woodworking stores.

Joe,
Nope no chain pulling here, exactly as stated. I caught him the next day as he was delivering (get this😀) a box of wood. He said that in the few weeks that he has had the route I was the only one who had gotten anything to do with woodworking😛. Now that label had to be on in the post office to get into my carriers route. I've talked to a couple of guys in the club and they said that the label comes off very easily, maybe a bad batch of labels?

Bill,
I'm guessing you don't live in a big city.

When we lived in Maryland our letter carrier Louise, our letter carrier often remarked about some of the art show invitations we recieved.

After moving back to Florida we have Kevin who has never discussed what we get but he has come back to the shop with packages.

happy turning,
Al

Bad label

In the 1950s our family would come to NC for several weeks. My father would have "The Miami Herald" mailed to us. The address was: Name, Puzzle Gulley, RR#1, Saluda, NC. PG was the name of the farm. One of the labels was miss printed, the only thing that was there was: Puzzle Gulley. It made it fine, no other paper was sent with it.

Bill B,

I was just a little bit skeptical, because my label was on the upper right part of the bag, instead of over the blank space on the front cover (where it's normally printed). I cut the bag (with label), and taped it inside, to preserve the subscription info. It's still intact.

You're all right about relationships with the carrier, though. Too often, both sides of the equation are zeroes. I've had good rapport with mine, and went to the funeral of my carrier from a previous address, based on a report from my present carrier. As Sam Goldwyn said, "If you don't go to their funerals, they won't come to yours."

Yay for poly bags..... sort of.

Yesterday I received an envelope from USPS saying that my mail had been damaged by one of their sorting machines and they were sending me what remained. All i received was a torn up poly bag with mailing label attached. So now I have to see if AAW will send me another magazine. 🙁🙁

Yep, I just got a Hartville catalog, or what was left of it, in the USPS poly bag just last night.

I have not yet gotten my AAW mag, poly bag or no! I'll try to be patient!

(Lord, give me patience... AND RIGHT NOW!!! . . .Please?)

Guys, guys, guys.............it's your postal service not the publisher, shipper or poly-wrapper. I love the USPS, I ship a LOT, they told me how to better pack and wrap. Their cancelling machines are massive and very, very fast.

My mailman has become a friend, he feels bad when he has to deliver something that has been mangled and apologizes! And he didn't do it.

Yes, I live in the country 😀 ...... lucky me!

Mail carriers are real people...........well, at least in the country.

Call me an "old grump", "living in the past", whatever, but the only thing that happens when we use plastic in any form is that the oil companies make more money. I hope Betty thinks "green" and uses paper to protect the Journals. Trees and paper can be recycled. And the only mark on this Journal was on the outside before being put in the poly bag.

Barry, thank you, I totally agree. It just seems that if some people got mangled issues and a lot of people did not, it certainly was not the fault of the AAW or whoever actually puts the Journal in the mail.

The use of plastic and those *$%!#@ foam peanuts should be banned. I do a lot of shipping and use either newspaper or shopping bags......yes, they are plastic but they can be recycled or donated to Salvation Army (that's where mine go).

This is a major aggravation to me because a local mountain top was blown away to create a new landfill. Landfill = people's garbage, 90% not biodegradable, aka plastic, from "throw-away society".

whew, that was quite a rant...........(step, step....getting down off soap box)

As I've mentioned, only once have I received a damaged Journal. In the near 30 years that I've received the unbagged Fine Woodworking it's never been damaged. In fact I can't recall any of my subscriptions arriving in a damaged state.

But regardless, I think at the end of the day poly bagging is too expensive. Money that could be better spent. And, I hope will be.

What magazine???

I still don't have mine. For a while it was getting better but 2 weeks after others and still no copy. Of course one time my Woodturning for the prior month showed up and the new one the next day.

I just wanted to update my earlier post. After contacting the AAW, they gladly sent out a new copy of the Woodturner's Journal. I recieved it in perfect condition. Life is good once more. AHHHHHH! :cool2:
