A few of us woodturners will be traveling from Abbotsford, Canada down the I5 to the 1 day Symposium in Olympia towards the end of July. I was wondering if anybody knows of some interesting places to stop to break up the drive ie. tool/wood stores or anything else of interest to woodturners.

POI's in the Seattle area

There are two Rockler stores and one Woodcraft store in Seattle. The Rockler stores have good selections of exotics and the best pen making kit selections. Woodcraft has a better selection of tools (including turning tools, chucks, etc.) than Rockler. WC is also the easiest to visit for folks running down I-5. Exit at Michigan street - a couple of miles south of the I-90 interchange. Turn right into the Rockler lot at the bottom of the off ramp, just before the light at Michigan Street.

Also:
NW Wood, a supplier of local wood(including imported specimen types) for turning and carving.
Crosscut Hardwoods is someplace else you could stop for wood.
EdenSaw is another supplier, but a bit out of your way.

Of course there is Grizzly Tools in Bellingham, but they aren't open on the weekends.

Ralph (who's stopped at just about every toy, er-ah tool store in the lower main-land or on the Island)

Boeing's permanent garage sale is worth a look for unusual hardware, tools, and materials. From I-5 south of Seattle, take I-405 East; then after about 5 miles or less, access something like "East Valley Highway" south to Kent. Google maps can probably give more accurate directions. Open Saturdays as of 20+ years ago, closed Sunday and Monday IIRC.

Closed last year, for good

Very saddened to learn that. It was a highly regarded local institution.

McDonnell-Douglas had a pale imitation in Long Beach CA.

And, locally, one of our premier scrap metal yards no longer sells offcuts, and functions as a recycling buyer only. Probably inspired by a perceived sense of liability. We're becoming too careful for our own good.

What next? Not allowed to buy a wood lathe without two-year apprenticeship program? Under gummint approval, of course.
