OK this is a project from a piece of wood anyone else would have thrown away. I don't remember who gave me this piece. It was the corner of a solid core door. It was about 4 1/2" square, had 3/16" cherry veneer on the outside and a piece of cherry on one side and a dado on the other side. I kept it around for quite a while and everytime I looked at it thought why in the world am I keeping this. I kept thinking that maybe someday I will come up with a project for it.
Well it finally talked to me. I decided to make a mirror. I glued 2 more pieces of Cherry to the outside and filled in the Dado with cherry. I turned the mirror side and then started on the back. It was about 3 times as thick as my normal mirrors and I started to turn away some of it but then it started to look interesting. I thought what if I leave some of that cherry veneer. I did but didn't like it . then I thought what if I make a box out of it.
I hollowed it out which also reduced the weight so the mirror feels more like a normal sized mirror as far as balance.
turned a lid and then decided to add some epoxy with gold leaf in it for a little more decoration.
dug through my stash and found some more cherry and good quality plywood and made the handle.
I'm pretty happy with this one.

Now that......is something really different! 😀

I guess some suggestions from the ladies would help with what would fit perfectly with the mirror/box concept.

Looks like a very nice job, John......thanks for showing us.

You didn't mention it, but the opening appears to be threaded -- a good idea in this situation.

Just a hunch, but this appears to be more like a guy mirror than one for the ladies.

Bill it is a threaded lid. Forgot to mention that. I was once asked by a lady to make a masculine mirror. I wasn't sure what to do. I thought about it for a while and then Knurled the handle so it looked more like a tool. She loved it. Never did hear if he did or not. 🙂 I have a socket wrench I bought at the flea mkt. It will be incorporated into a mirror some day.

John, make it like a fishing rod grip, golf club grip, hammer handle, or whatever. Let me know and I can help with the fishing rod grip as I have lots of cork.

i like how you added the cherry with the plywood. nice piece, maybe a primitive club for the handle on the next one, or just do a primitive club.

Oh you mean like this one. 🙂

I made this a very long time ago. Used to keep it on my desk because they said I was Neanderthal.

John, I'm always astounded by your creativity. I often look to your pieces for inspiration when I have a hard time finding whatever might be hiding inside a particular piece of wood.

Actually Bill this lady would happily keep her hair ties in it. Sure beats running around loose in the drawer! They are just covered rubber bands, so many can fit. And because of the hair length I use a mirror daily to check the back of my head. Great idea John- look forward to trying this.

Wow never thought of that Lou, thanks for the idea. I tried to grow a pony tail once about 20 years ago. My hair was so curly it looked more like a bun on the back of my head than a pony tail. Photos taken from the side made it look more like a mullet. Not a good look for me. 🙂
