Someone asked how to post a picture next to their name, like Little Buddy the cat is posted on mine. It's easy:
  • make sure you are logged in
  • click "my settings" at the top left on the page
  • click "edit avatar", since the picture represents your avatar
  • select an existing avatar from the available list
  • OR select "use a custom avatar" and browse to upload your pic

The picture must be 20kb or less, and 80pixels x 80pixels or less.

So does mine ...........

Yep, I know. They all have little triangular tufted ears, whiskers, fur, fangs, tufted toes with retractable claws, furry tail, etc. Somehow, I am able to distinguish Mr. Squeak from all of the others.

I have an interesting observation -- I see a number of cat avatars, but no dogs. I wonder if cats are more into turning than dogs are.

I was in a friend's shop a few months ago and his big dog slept under the lathe -- even while I was turning and, Bear, the big black lab became completely covered with shavings, he did not move. After all, it was "his" spot and a few shavings weren't going to bother him.

That's why I used my DOG!!!

Plus, he's my best buddy. My wife and I have three (1 Golden Retriever(Newton) and 2 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers (Hope and Deeds)) Newton is 100% my dog 😀 ... Deed's is my wife's shadow 🙂 , and Hope goes where she wants 😱 ... ususally where the food or attention is!

Dog's rule (cat's, well... )

He's not posessed but he does have one blown pupil from glaucoma that looks pretty creepy when he stares at you.

The orange one is Max, the grey is Nick, and the big brown fertalizer machine is Jack the Idiot Lab.

thumbnail size is 96

my thumbnail size is 96 instead of 80 anybody know how to change it
i'm running xp and microsoft picture it?????????????? 😕 😕 😕 😕

I'm not familiar with Picture It. 🙁

You could get the right size using MS Paint (Image -> Stretch/Skew ... Set Horizontal to 83%, set Vertical to 83%) but this will most likely wreck your image.

What you really want is a program that will resample the image at the new size, not just toss (or add) pixels until it fits. I use a free program called IrfanView to resize images with just a few keystrokes:
  • Open the image (or copy & paste it)
  • Press Ctrl-R (or choose Image -> Resize/Resample...)
  • Make sure "Set new size" is the selected option. (It's the default.)
  • Type 80 into the "Width" and "Height" boxes.
  • Press Enter.
  • Resave the image. If it's just text or a geometric design with a few colors, try the GIF format. For photos, stick with JPG. (For an image this small, use 100% to avoid compression. For larger images, you can save a lot of disk space by going down to 92% or so without losing clarity.)
Picture It probably has a similar function - it's just a matter of finding it!

I have Microsoft Digital Image Pro. Probably the same options. When you go to save the pic select options. In the options select Image Dimensions or Image Size. Type in a custom size to meet the target.

For typical pictures posted here or in the picture forum, the size should be 600x800 or 480x640, or similar.

For all you cat and dog lovers

I finally got around and took a picture of my friend's cat.

It's a great picture though. The giveaway that it is a hoax is that cat would probably be about 100 pounds, yet the guy holding it is not straining at all (except to hold in his beer gut).

In your original post you said, "my thumbnail size is 96 instead of 80". I assumed you meant that the size of the thumbnail image was 96 x 96 pixels.

The new information leads me to believe that your original image is not "square". Is it something like 120 x 96 pixels?

If so, then when you enter 80 for the height (which would reduce the original 120 height by 1/3) the program probably automatically reduces the 96 width by 1/3 and enters 64 for the width. Then, when you manually enter 80 for the width (increasing it by 1/4) the program automatically increases the height by 1/4 and changes 80 to 100.

If this is what happens, then just enter 80 for the height and save the image at a size of 80 x 64. Avatar images don't have to be "square", especially if that would make them look "stretched" in one direction or the other. Retaining the original proportions is more important.

Try some smaller sizes and see what happens. Maybe 60x60. Then work up from there. Also try compressing the file (in the photo utility). That will get the overall file size down.

Just for clarification, compressing will change the quality of the image, but will do nothing to change the number of pixels.
