I don't know where your buying the kits at but I found this place some time back, kind of forgot about them. One of the other forums I use they came up again. Any way they have good prices on kits and from what I can see they are as good or better quality than any of the wood working supply places Stuff I've seen. Just thought I should pass it along
on the price list they sent me you could even order seperate parts in case you lose or damage something

I recently bought mill mechanisms from chefpepper.com. Their mechanisms appear to be what the woodturnig catalogs call their deluxe mechanisms for about 60% of the price. They offer 4, 6, 8, and 10 inch salt and pepper mills and pepper mills only in 12, 14, 18 and 24 inch sizes. Also, I agree, they are of noticeably better quality. Simply stated, they work better and feel like they'll last longer.

Oh, by the way, in a restaurant, the taller the pepper mill, the more expensive it's going to be.

Made the mistake of showing the kits to the little woman. I am now making pepper mills for Christmas presents including an 18" one for her.

Mort, somehow this has the feel of "What goes around comes around." Fortunately, after Christmas they and SWMBO will owe you.

Unfortunately

My mother shared a pearl of her wisdom with SWMBO - "What is yours is yours and what is his is yours". SWMBO has not forgotten that! To make matters worse 4 of the pepper mills are earmarked for the children. One or more of whom will then want a pepper mill to match the wood in their dinning room suite.
Add all of that to the fact that"we" have determined that "we" have all of the tools and wood necessary 😱 somethimes a guy just can't win.

Morts mills

Mort, you just have to look at it this way, not only are your kids going to owe you dinners to show off their new mills that were "custom" matched to their dining rooms suites, but swmbo is going to owe you some new tool that will be imperitive in making these fine family heirlooms. Remember the more of the item to be produced the bigger the tool you need to do it. MP Wall

Making over 1 or 2 of the same thing means you can get pretty much any kind of tool that you want ... err ... need . 3 or more requires INDUSTRIAL types of tools. 😉

Let me know how that one works out, will ya?

I am right there with both of you and since she has been drolling over a half tester Charles Eastlake designed bed - 8' by 6" four poster type of bed - I have been yucking up a new lathe like a OneWay 1640 with all of the goodies including the bed extension to turn those 8' long corner posts.
Time will tell
But this kid is not holding his breath.

BTW
1640 $4,500 +- all up.
Eastlake Tester Bed $18,000 plus shipping and crating.

Boy you got it rough Mort, a wife that sends you to the shop, terrible I say just terrible!! 😀 😀
