I got my e-mail special notification from Penn State Industries and their 4-Jaw utility chuck is on special for $44.95 with 2 sets of jaws and the screw adapter.

Here's the link: http://www.pennstateind.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=E-10229

I hava had this chuck for quite a while and decided that I'd get another one, so I could just keep my jumbo flat jaws on one and use the other for bowls, etc. When I first got it there was a runout problem, but it was the 1" x 8 adapter that was out of true and they replaced it. The only issue I have had with this chuck has been getting used to the Tommy-Bars.

Just thought I'd pass on this to my friends here on the forum.

I have no affiliation with PSI - other than being a happy customer.

I also have ordered one of the new Baracuda2 T-Handle adjust chucks as well. The Baracuda2 has teeth (instead of smooth dovetails) in the jaws much like the Talon, but for quite a bit less and I thought I'd give it a try, since teh utility chuck has worked so well for me.

Kurt.
Please keep us informed on that new Barracuda2 one. I saw it on the back page of their magazine but when I checked the site it was out of stock.
It sure looks like a close copy of my Oneway talon scroll chuck and I may get one for my home made jumbo jaws if I hear good reports about it..
I am curious as to whether they went so far in copying that the jaw screw holes would be the same spacing as the talon.
It is little wonder they are out of stock if it is good as the ad describes it.

I just purchased this. It appears to be a nicely built unit. However, when I screw it on the lathe it wobbles like a Weebil (remember those?).

I called Penn State and got a grumpy tech support guy who didn't believe me that it was wobbling. After I explained that when I slide the tailstock up to the screw center held in the chuck, the screw center orbits the tailstock's center by about 1/8", he told me to send the whole thing back so they could inspect it. Ugh. I told him it appears to be the adapter, and other people have had the same problem. He finally agreed to send me a new adapter.

He transferred me to the order department where the nice young lady had no idea what I was talking about. 10 minutes later I think there's finally a new adapter on the way.

I hope Penn State's service is generally better than this. I had the misfortune of getting the same guy in tech service when I called a week ago to ask about toolrests and was not pleased.
