I just renewed my membership and was curious why this forum does not use Paypal as an option to make a payment. I think it would be wise to consider looking into this option in the near future. It has become a recognized safe and sec ur way of doing ecommerce. I as a member would like to have this brought up at one of the regular meetings. Being there is a new regime once again coming in maybe they can take on this suggestion and others. Thanks.

John,
If you check I think that you will find that there is no regime change as the board has not changed. My guess would be that the fees for PayPal might be higher than what is paid now but perhaps it should be looked into. Even though there was a little glitch for a few days the current system has always worked fine for me.

John, the most effective way to have your message heard would be to send an email. A post to a Forum does not get the same attention. The new Executive Director is Cindy Bowden. She is the person who oversees business operations such as you discuss. Email her at cindy@woodturner.org.

Additionally, the Forum is pretty much separate from the running of the AAW. There are two Forum moderators who are volunteers, and neither have much connection to the AAW administration.

Thank you for renewing your membership! AAW membership surpasses 14,000 this year, a milestone, and still growing!

I have a slight suspicion that this message may be posted to the wrong forum...

If I'm mistaken, I have a question:
How is paying via PayPal going to be a better option for you than the current setup? Both require a credit card though PayPal can directly debit your bank account. (You could use a bank debit card on the AAW payment page if you don't want the charge going to a credit account.)

Simplicity, it takes less keystrokes, comes out of the same bank account (for me) and I don't have to pull the card out of my wallet. And actually, the fees are probably less for the merchant on PayPal than what they would average out to with credit card transactions. Especially Amex or members rewards cards.

This is true.......

When the option is available to me, I generally prefer the Paypal payment. The charge is deducted directly from my checking account.....it's done. With a credit card, it's not a done deal until after the statement is received, and paid.

With the Paypal, I enter it into the check register at the time of payment......and, is better for managing my money. With the CC, it's very easy to get a little carried away, and get a "surprise" when the statement arrives.

That's why I mentioned using my checking account Visa debit card - comes directly out of my account within a day or so. I hadn't thought about all of the effort to pull out my wallet! No wonder I was so beat after renewing!🙄

Well, yes......of course you are right, Owen.......😀

I think the whole Paypal thing is a matter of convenience for some people. We all have our own methods of managing our money, and what works best for some, may not work best for others. I would use the Paypal if it were available as an option, but have no problem using a credit card, or debit card (If I had one), for making a payment to a known receiver (such as AAW).

Internet payments are the future, and there is one distinct advantage to using Paypal over other methods.....and that is it's always a secure payment. Using a CC or DC, is generally safe, but only as secure as the host's web site......and some are better than others. With Paypal, the personal details, card numbers, and account information is all held off site, so I can feel secure in using Paypal, even when I am not completely comfortable with who I'm making a payment to........

Thanks

I thought the forum was tied directly to AAW thus the name. My bad as they say. It would do no good then telling her about the use of Paypal.

Yes I think Paypal is a better and more secure option. As well as this maybe what most people think is a secure site and the use of a credit card is no problem is probably a little too trustworthy. I just had a credit card picked off and am not sure where or how but this is one reason I am a little more reluctant to use one. Thus the suggestion of Paypal. Yes it is also alot more convinient as was mentioned. Maybe by next year it will be in place when I renew again.

OK I have to go turn something now.

If I were you, I wouldnt worry John. With my experience, I think you will find alot of things in this forum that shouldnt be here. As far as conenience, think debit card is the most, no fees.

John, not to belabor the point, but you were correct that the AAW Forum is tied directly to the AAW, it's just that the operation of the organization is such that a direct message to the ED is more effective. It may be that the ED (or other administrative staff) read some of the posts to the Forum, but that's not a guarantee. They do, however, read emails sent to them directly.
