Folks,

I have the sad news that Giles Gilson passed away this morning. I don’t have any details to share other than that he passed quietly at his home. While he had health problems it was something of a shock to me. I had spoken to him recently and he seemed well. His family has said it’s fine to share the news with friends in the woodworking and art communities.

For those who knew Giles, he was something special. For those who didn't know him, he was a pioneer. His work made so many inroads and broke many barriers. His collected around the world. It is a great loss to the woodturning and art world.

Giles was a true friend for more than thirty years. A real artist in many areas.
A creator. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Giles was sure one of a kind. I had the good fortune to take a few workshops with him because he was local to me and our woodworking/woodturning clubs. He was incredibly intelligent and and extraordinary artist with a wry sense of humor. I wish I had spent more time learning from him.

I found a video from the 90's on his obituary site that you may enjoy. It shows a VERY small sample of some of the phenomenal work he did. He was quite prolific in many styles-an innovator in all of them. His skills and techniques and designs are unique and amazing. He had the patience to achieve an incredible level of pefection in his finishes that is mind boggling.

I can imagine he is having a great time wherever he ended up.

This is my introduction to Giles Gilson......Sorry to say I've never been aware of him before. What an incredible artist, and uniquely intense personality. I was drawn into not just who he was, but what and where he was in the abstract of personality. It's good that some of his personal thoughts are preserved for the future of his legacy......I feel that most of what he had to say is probably beyond comprehension to the majority of those who listened, but that doesn't mean those who didn't, will not be able to appreciate his accomplishments. Those who did look through that window, will have a unique perspective of that which was him........
