Participate in Special Interest Night at the AAW Symposium (Long)
If you have looked at the general program for the upcoming AAW Symposium’s “Special Interest Nightâ€, one of the topics being presented will be “Woodturner’s Gizmos and Gadgets†which will highlight various jigs, specialized tools, repurposed items, and creative solutions developed by woodturners. My hope is that participants would come away from this SIN session with lots of ideas they can take home and try themselves, and tell others about them at their Chapter meetings.
This SIN session is meant to be a specialized “Show and Tell†session for the exchange of ideas on how woodturners have solved problems through creative “tinkering†and development of practical solutions to common woodturning problems. If you have repurposed some item to aid in your woodturning techniques, modified an existing tool or device to improve how you turn , or have developed a gizmo that makes your woodturning more efficient, of higher quality, or can be done more safely, this is the SIN session for you!! One of my intentions is to allow attendees to participate in the discussion, and for those members who can’t attend the Symopsium, to still participate by submitting a description (and images) of your gizmo or gadget with a brief description of how it was made and how it is used in woodturning. A friend suggested that as long as I was compiling all of this information and images, I should put together a “Woodturner’s Gizmos and Gadgets†Web Page, which can be added-to in the future – a great idea!! All information received will be presented (and possibly put onto a forthcoming web site, if permission is given) with full credit to the person submitting the idea and images.
IF YOU ARE ATTENDING THE SYMPOSIUM:
For those who are planning on attending the Symposium and can bring their ‘gizmo’ or ‘gadget’ item with them to show, they would get about 3 to 5 minutes to present their item to the group, demonstrate how it works, give some idea about how it was made, from what items, and how it performs. If you can’t bring the item to demonstrate, we can generate a few Powerpoint slides in advance of the meeting for you to present the item or idea to the group. You can send images to me (see below) and I can put together slides to allow you to explain the item to the group. This will definitely be a group-participation session! Just let me know what you would like to show, and I’ll get you into the SIN line-up as a presenter!
IF YOU AREN’T ABLE TO ATTEND BUT WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE:
Even if you can’t attend the AAW Symposium, you can still participate in this SIN activity by submitting descriptions of your gizmo to me in advance as long as you are willing to have your item shown to the SIN group with Powerpoint images and explained with the description you provide. This would allow many turners to contribute and participate in the symposium, even if only for a few minutes, and would contribute to the goal of sharing practical woodturning information and ideas.
SUBMITTING IMAGES AND DESCRIPTIONS:
I will be putting together a Powerpoint presentation to organize and moderate the SIN session for Friday evening, June 24th. Clearly written descriptions and good quality images will help all attending the session to come away with some great ideas.
If you would like to have your idea presented (if you can’t attend the symposium) or if you would like to have some Powerpoint slides available to help with your description of your item, please submit descriptions and images as follows:
1. Send the description information in the body of an e-mail message and up to 4 images per item as attachments (i.e. NOT as embedded images) to me at:
rwallace@iastate.edu
Be sure to include your name, city & state, e-mail address, and a description of the item, including what it is used for, what it is made from, special techniques needed, etc. (Remember - this is YOUR Show and Tell presentation!). Please also let me know if you are willing to have people contact you at your e-mail address for more information on your ‘gizmo’ or ‘gadget’.
2. The SUBJECT LINE of your message should begin with “SINâ€, then your name. i.e. ‘Subject: SIN – John Lucas’
3. IMAGES – should be submitted as jpegs only. Please keep the size of each image between 100K to 500K if possible so we don’t get too many ‘large file rejections’ by my University’s server (….we won’t need very high resolution images for Powerpoint anyway…!).
4. SUBMISSIONS can be accepted by e-mail from now until Monday, June 20th at 9 pm (Central Time). All submissions will be acknowledged by reply e-mail. I will need Tuesday and Wednesday of “Symposium Week†to complete the SIN line-up/presentation before I head to St. Paul on Thursday.
This Special Interest Night activity is an experiment – I hope you can help by either making a Show and Tell demonstration of your gizmo at the Symposium, or contributing one or two of your favorite innovations to share with others. This activity has the potential to be really fun and informative, as long as we get participation - If successful, this could become a recurring theme for future SIN activities!!
Thanks in advance for your help!! I am looking forward to seeing many of you in St. Paul at the AAW Symposium in TWO WEEKS!!! 😀
