Ever have one of those moments when you realize how lucky you are? Yesterday I think God grabbed my attention by kicking me in the stomach and reminded me that next time I may get the new nick-name of "Nine Fingers". I had been in the shop most of the day and was cutting some 3" sq. glue blocks out of basswood. Since that was mindless work I was thinking about the next step when a block got caught by the table saw and kicked back. Instead of pulling my fingers into the saw it hit my hand so hard I thought it broke my thumb, and it split the skin. Then it hit me just below the rib cage so hard the little piece of basswood knocked all 220 lbs. of me on the ground. Took me several minutes to get up. Today my thumb is so sore I can barely write and my stomach is all kinds of pretty colors from the bruising.

The message here is to always pay full attention to the task at hand, safety first!

Thanks for the reminder.

I'm going to be using my router table and table saw this afternoon and I will remember your admonition.

Glad you weren't more seriously hurt.

Clem

Glad your alright. I had the same thing happen several years ago. I was cutting 3" square pine block. I had a 3/4" piece of wood on the rip fence as a spacer so thier would be clearance when I cut the block to prevent kickback. Well a 3" square block is longer than 3 3/4" on the diagonal so when one of the block vibrated and twisted it hit me in the chest so hard I thought it broke my ribs. Lesson learned, I now use a 6" spacer block when I'm cutting duplicates like that.

I'm glad you weren't injured more severely, wood. We gotta always remember that we're working with alot of force in addition to sharp edges when we're using power tools.

I also gotta say that table saws are best for precision and flat work rather cutting blanks or glue blocks for that exact reason. Best save the blank cutting for the band saw. Kickback becomes much less likely.

Speaking of which, saw photos a while back of someone cutting round blanks from green wood, freehand on a table saw. GURK!!!!!

Take care,
Dietrich
