OT - Grumpy Customers

I spent many years selling cameras. You left out one thing. "I can buy this for X number of dollars in New York why can't you meet that price". (He says after you just spent 3 days answering questions about the equipment.
I remember a guy giving my boss a real hard time about a camera price. My boss told him the price was firm. The guy comes back a few days later and said I'll take the camera. How much did you say it was. My boss told him the price which was $10 higher than the previous day. The guy said I thought you said the price was so and so the other day. My boss said, it was but I added a $10 hassle fee. The guy paid it and left with the camera.

Someone clearly has too much free time on his hands. < vbg >

John,

Reminds me of the story my dad told me, from a friend of his that ran a pretty upscale men's clothing store in Greensboro. Lady came in, wanted a white, button-down, 16 1/2-34 oxford shirt. Yes ma'mm, here you go, that'll be $28.00. $28.00 ?!?!?!? So and so store down the street has them for $16.00! Well, ma'mm, no disrespect, but why didn't you buy it there? Well, they were out of them. Well, ma'mm, when I'm out of them, they're $16.00 as well............

When a customer wanted a discount my old boss added $5 each time the customer opened their mouth.

When they complained about the rises, he would reply. "You should have bought them at the discounted rate."

love it

been there done that and still continue to do that

Had a lady in the other day, ask me how much shirts are I told her 3.25 a shirt
she told me she had 40 of them and they were cheaper down the street.

I told her that I did not blame her for going some place else. and Just laughed at her. It is great to own your own business.

I sell tools, The one that gets me is the guy who ask every question under the sun takes up an hour of your time then when you say can I get one for you he says NO your to expensive I'll buy it on line. Pretty soon your not going to have a place to see or touch a tool before you buy it.

had one a few weeks ago ask me about a price for a shaving kit i made
told them the price asked if i would take less
said no
asked how much i said same as when you first asked
he asked if i would take a little higher then he first said ad i said i would take more then he said would i take the price i told him when he asked
i said no it was no longer for sale
then he offered me more then i said to begin with
he now has a nice shaving set

Those who have worked in retail will probably relate to this video...or, how I spent my Friday afternoon, making this silly thing: http://youtu.be/TQ4vxMZZL5g

So, Ed, now that you've had some time to cool off, would you mind sharing some details about what happened (without naming names, of course)? I enjoyed the video, but, doggone-it, you've got me awfully curious.

Yes Ed,
Very good. Always keep your composure. Though I admit I have had trouble doing so. To lash out at customer would get around far quicker than having a good sale.

Discounts? It would be nice to ask customers if they ask for a discount at the grocery, gas station, restaurant. True, there might have some sort of promo but further discounts aren't in the picture.

John One thing I learned in dealing with foreign customers is that in their country it is expected that you haggle over price. that's just how it's done. at first I was hacked off but then after talking to one of the customers he explained that in his country no price is solid and unless you want to get ripped off you are expected to haggle. He said he was trying to learn to not do that here but old habits are hard to get over.
