Hey guys, just a heads up, remember during your Holiday celebrations that this is the time of year that blood and platelets are needed the most. If you can donate during the holidays, please, please do so.

ABSOLUTELY!!!
As an anesthesiologist (and avid woodturner) in a busy trauma center, I must say that red blood cells, platelets, and plasma (all gotten from your blood donations) save MANY lives each year. Besides, especially for most men, donating blood makes you healthier (reduces risk for heart attack and strokes by "thinning" your blood a bit); and... it feel good inside.

I certainly agree with both of you. Jeff I've never heard the theory of in thinning your blood. I'm sure it would for a few days but doesn't your body just build the blood back up? I'm just speculating, having no medical background whatsoever. I know my body feels better for a day after I donate. In fact I had one of my best weight workouts ever about 6 hours after donating. I know it says to take it easy after you donate but I just needed a workout and it was killer. Anyway just wondering.
And another question while I'm here. It takes about 2 to 3 times as long for me to donate a pint as it does for college kids. I'll tell you that I am an avid bicyclist and my resting heart rate is 48. Is that the difference or is it simply their heart beats stronger and maybe faster. I'm 63 by the way.
Anyway I urge everyone to donate. If you've ever been in a hospital in an emergency you know how badly this is needed.

Good idea. I have to pass as I have a blood condition that won't allow me to donate. None of my blood or components can be used and must be destroyed to prevent it's use.
Jeff Gilfor, does that mean you are the Ether Bunny?

Hmm... Never thought of that, but guess I am. Haven't used ether since the 80s though.

Yes, the body will replace the blood, but the plasma (liquid) part will return to fill the void almost immediately, thereby making your blood less viscous. The cells take a week or two to start building back up. Also, generally speaking. Healthy males have relatively thicker blood because we don't menstruate (although I've known guys who I suspected secretly did ;-)). Better workout may be related to better blood flow through small vessels in the muscles. Not really sure though.

Now back to turning! What's your favorite gouge grind?
