Oneway vacuum adaptor and Jet 1642

I recently setup a vacuum chucking system on my Jet 1642, and have only one problem with it, so far. I switched to the Oneway vacuum adapter from a cheaper model that couldn't be sealed well and leaked through the bearings badly.

As I said, the system now works very well, but I notice that when I'm not using the vacuum chuck, the spindle seems to 'rumble' rather loudly. It seems like the vacuum hose coming off the adapter at a right angle throws the balance of the spindle off. This is not noticed when the vacuum chuck is being used.

My questions are - has anyone else noticed this with the Jet? If so, how do you handle it? Are my bearings going to be effected?

I can remove it when not vacuum chucking (that's what I'm doing now) but it's less than ideal - removing and replacing with the standard handwheel.

I, and most turners I have talked to, remove the vacuum adapter when not using the vacuum system. The main reason is to minimize the wear on the bearings and the seals. I have not seen any specs on the lifetime of the bearings and seals but logic tells me that any vacuum seal will degrade over time when it is continually used.
I suspect that you are correct that the vacuum hose hanging off of the rotary adapter is causing the noise.
Also, the type vacuum adapter I use lends itself to easy insertion and removal since it just pushes into the outboard end of the hollow spindle and seals with o-rings.

I have the same setup (1642 with the oneway adapter) and have had no problem with noise.

Currently I leave the adapter in place all the time but would love to remove it because removing MT2 headstock pieces is a pain without the ramrod.

My concern is about damaging the 'o' ring seal on the adapter by repeated installation and removal. Has anyone had any experience with this and were there any issues?

I had my handwheel bored out to accept a bearing that has a 1/2" ID. I then inserted a brass hose barb in the bearing. I put closed cell foam ring inside the handwheel hole. then all I have to do to install or remove the vacuum hose is pull it out or push it in. I have a Powermatic so I don't know if the handwheel on the jet can be bored out.
